I am helping a friend clear out an estate, and stumbled onto a very large RCA console under a pile of crap in the garage. Here's what I can make out from what I can see - I would peg it in the late 40's (maybe?), because it is Stereo, AM/FM, Phono. It has a door on the left that has the slide rule dial with a tuning eye in about the center of the dial, and, if memory serves, 5 clear knobs below it. Below that is a pull out phonograph. The right door opens and there is nothing but speaker. The interesting thing is it has another separate speaker, similar to a Zenith I had years ago. I can't tell if it has the separate volume and tone controls like the Z. This looks like it was a higher end unit back in it's day. The place is to the point where they're going to get a clean out service to come in and haul everything else away.....I know these aren't popular, but I wonder if it's worth the hassle to dig it out and save it, or dig it out and scavenge it , or just let it get trucked off. I wish I could have got some pics, but it was way too dark and piled up. I can't find anything like it online.

If it says "stereo" on it, it is no earlier than the late 1950s. If you can access the tube location sticker (pasted on an inner wall of the cabinet), that should have the model number on it.

If it has true multiplex stereo FM it's early 60s at newest...

Something like the units discussed in this thread?

If so, these are desirable.

I am working on a variation of this and the OP's description sounds exactly like what this is. And yes- It is a NICE set, thus make sure to not toss it out on the curb...

Yep! That's the one! It also has a separate speaker that matches the one in the cabinet, with the horizontal grille bars and cloth.....
Now to dig it out and hopefully it isn't completely boogered up......
"If it says "stereo" on it, it is no earlier than the late 1950s." - I only assumed it was "stereo" because of the extra speaker. Like I said, I had a Zenith R/P combo that had a separate speaker with it's own volume, tone and presence controls on it, and it was a 1948. I DO have an early 60's Granco set my father got when he worked with George "The Hound" Lorenz at WBLK here in Buffalo in the late '50s and early '60s.

Here's another ARF thread discussing the 1958 RCA-Victor Orthophonic Hi Fidelity console.

Doors open, the one in the other thread is the same, doors closed, totally different. This one has a reddish Mahogany cabinet with ornate brass pulls.

It was typical for a manufacturer to offer the same chassis in several cabinet styles.

I believe your receiver is mono but the phonograph and/or tape recorder may be stereo.

This set came with a few cabinet styles. They were sold in '58-'59 and are excellent performers - definitely worth restoring. I'd rate this set in the top 5% of sets that RCA ever built in terms of performance.

Thanks for the info everyone! NOW.... my next question - Would anyone here be interested in it if it isn't a total mess? Like I said, I have neither the time to restore nor a place to store a behemoth like that....I have 3 on my plate now - A Stromberg model 64, a Philco 16 , and my most recent acquisition, an Emerson BS-227 (a long term pj).

I'll go over, dig it out, and try to get some pics. I can't keep it, I may as well part it out so others may live!

Somebody in Buffalo wants that console. With the right ad, it will sell for a few bucks. Throw in some classic 1957 LP's maybe?

I have no idea of it's total condition. I can only get the left door open fully, and the right only partially. There is stuff piled on top of it, in front of it, and on the sides . The one promising thing is that the bottom layer of carp on top is a piece of carpeting. He apparently used the garage as a workshop at one time - workbench, 220 electric, heat, insulation (torn and falling down now). I saw it and wanted to find out if it was worth saving. I will be going back over the weekend, and will dig it out and get pics. I don't know how much time I have left to get it out of there before she has a crew come in. I just was thinking out loud that I can't move it myself, and have no place for it, so it would be better to salvage the chassis and any pertinent parts and let the cabinet get dumped instead of the whole thing....

UPDATE : I have dug it out and brought it to my friend's shop, and have pictures. What I THOUGHT was a separate matching speaker while it was buried turned out to be the matching STR-2 Reel to Reel unit! Here are some pics - the first few are of it in situ.

I have limited time to keep it where it is, so I'll post it in the classified section, see if there's any interest. Thanks
