hello folks,

Here is my one of two final projects that I finally was able to finish up after my mother's stroke and sudden death a few weeks ago.

It is a Bendix 526E. it needed to have the standard restoration and the speaker completely rebuilt.

of course, the speaker was proprietary with hardware/bracket. with the dozens of speakers i have with brackets and near an identical match, only a couple came within 1/4 of an inch that made them not compatible with fit and form.

the speaker was rebuilt by Nick Dorazio in Ga who did an absolute perfect job with all parts replaced from the cone to the spider to the voice coil.

I had to order a dummy electrolytic from ebay to fill the hole and make the set look original.

I just could not stand having a patched up speaker and an open hole on the chassis in such a collectible set like this one. it had to be "right" ; OCD would have it no other way.

this set will go nicely right beside my bakelite 526 versions.

steve

thanks al,

i always wanted a set to match the bakelite version that i have.

i picked this up for $30 full-well knowing that the speaker needed to be reconed.

i'm very happy with the find.

Very nice Steve. Did you paint the dial's background white, or did you use something else?

Greg.

thanks greg,

i forgot to mention, the dial background needed to be painted as well.

for the amazing condition this set is in, the dial paint did not age well at all. it discolored even well beyond the "normal look" of an aged dial paint--which is usually a bit discolored anyway and absolutely acceptable.

i stripped the dial down, primed it, and used an off-white rattle can on it. the dial turned out to be very much original looking as per pics on the internet.

That's a beautiful radio, and those AA5/6's once restored last forever

Hey Steve -
I hope you and yours are doing well, and that Bendix is an absolute beauty!

I've always felt that set was a bit underappreciated compared to its catalin sibling. They added just enough curve to the cabinet to make it pretty and set it apart from the other hundreds of wooden slide-rule dial models of that era. Nice work!

I'm very sorry to hear of your loss.

The white looks very white on my monitor, but you have mentioned off-white, so that's OK Lol

In the past my local Mom and Pop paint store has given me small (sample) match pots of Antique and Ivory white for free.
Keeps me away from the big-box guys...

Greg.

yes, all is well here, except my 96 year old grandma is laying in the next room basically unresponsive. hospice is here every day and we believe things are shutting down.

she is not eating, drinking, or opening her eyes, and barely has enough strength to barely speak. nothing going in, nothing coming out. her color is terrible and she is bent up like a pretzel in the fetus position. we can't straighten her out.

she is 79 pounds, down from 125 last june, skin and bones, giving her a hug is like hugging a shopping cart or a picket fence.

her mind is gone from altzhimers and dementia. a few days ago, she did not even know me or know how to urinate. she told me i had to take the oranges to the moon.

we've been taking care of her since june. we've been given a job to do by the powers above and we will do it well with lots of love.

we are fine and strong. all will be well.

steve

Very nice. As our friends to the North would say "beauty".
