I am new to this site so hope someone out there can help. I just bought my husband a fada 711 butterscotch/red radio at a estate sale. It has some red pegasus (mobil oil/gas) decals on it. Do you think they were added by the owner or has anyone ever seen one like this? Just wondering, as I am in process of cleaning it up now to surprise him.

You joke? It would not be the first time I saw a radio with the red pegasus decals on a radio. They were popular, stuck about everwhere. BUT they don't belong with the 711. Surprise? Do you mind saying what you paid? He has a good heart ? That is a valuable radio, you might ought to read about Catlin before you do any more. Bill J.

Sorry if I seemed silly, but yes, I really didn't know. My husband likes old radios and I saw this one and since they wanted $5 for it (had to do some digging in a box) I figured it was worth a shot. Haven't been able to find out much about it. It needs the screen looking thing on the side redone as all the foamy stuff has just about rotted off it. Other than that it looks good. Doesn't appear to work to me though. I plugged it in, turned the knob til it clicked on and nothing. I hope husband likes it. thanks for the info on the decals, I appreciate it.

For $5 you did extremely well, even with a decal added to it. Google some values for the Fada 711 and you'll see, better be sitting down. Reproductions of the grill cover and dial cover can be bought online, but be careful about being too aggressive removing the decal. You could seriously damage the radio's value.

While I think we would all be happy to find this radio at an estate sale or elsewhere for what the OP paid, let's not get carried away. This radio was made in the dying days of Fada. The style isn't art deco and doesn't quite make it to mid century modern either. Just an awkward design. I've owned this in blue and also in green. The alabaster is the most common, but at least the OPs has red trim. $950? Doubt it. Plus, from what I read here, the OP's has some sort of decals on it. From the way catalin oxydizes, there will probably be uneven coloring once he removes the stickers/decals. So, the radio wil probably need to be wet sanded down to its original alabaster (white) color. Once sanded down, the alabaster with red trim will be a sharp color combo. $1000? Maybe...MAYBE..on a good, no great, day if there aren't any hairlines/cracks. Good find? Sure. Better than 99.9% of the stuff we find out there. Should be be sitting down when he finds out the value? Not really.

The last of the catalin radios 1946-1947. Realisticly speaking its a $400.00 radio if in perfect condition. No cracks, hairlines and with original patina.

thanks for the info. Didn't realize so much involved in restoration! Definitely much more than we care to attempt. Will probably just end up listing it on ebay and put money we get towards something that isn't such a project/eyesore. lol
