Hello Everyone,

I'm new here and hoping that you all can share a journey I'm about to make with this good old radio here.

I inherited a Grundig radio from my father who in turn inherited it from his father. It hasn't been working for a very long time and I intend to restore it completely to its former glory as I remember it when I was younger.

After doing a search, I'm pretty sure it's a Grundig Majestic console radio, but not sure of the exact year and model.

See the picture here: Image

What I can tell you is:

The radio has built-in speakers on the sides which are hidden by wooden "doors". The top flips up to reveal a record player & reel player side by side. Also 2 external speakers are available. The console is pretty big about 4'55" (140cm) width and 2'27" (70cm) height.

I'm not sure if that information helps in identifying it, but I would really appreciate your help in this. And hopefully you'll be hearing more from me as I work on it!

Thanks!

Does it have a back panel? The model number should be there. It will most likely be a 4 digit number, like 3083, possibly with letters before and/or after it.

The first thing I did was look for a back panel, long gone. I managed to ID the external speakers using radio museum website, but still can't figure out which model the radio is. I'm starting to doubt it's a Majestic. I'll broaden the search online and see if I can get anything tonight!

Looks like a metal G-R-U-N-D-I-G escutcheon over the top of the controls so the controls/chassis may be Grundig items. What puzzles me is the placement of the radio controls so near the ground, almost at ankle height. Poor design ... unless the console is a custom, homemade item. The controls also looks like a European design. Does the FM scale top out at 102?

The controls design surely looks early 1950s to me, 1956 latest maybe.

Suggestion 1: You could go the Radio Museum site, submit a "Grundig" search argument, then looks at anything that starts with letters ... "SO", "KS", et al, e.g., SO372, KS490, etc. Tedious but you may discover your console.

Suggestion 2: Post a photo of the complete radio so top and front can be easily seen. Certainly have more to go on ...

Hello again from Kuwait,

I know I disappeared for awhile and now back again with the radio.

I discovered that it is a Majestic 5199WE and I am in the process of ordering tubes and parts for it so I may be able to start restoring it. Hopefully it will be up and running again in time for the move into a new home!

Thank you for your responses, I truly appreciate your assistance!
