Check the audios, should be an easy restore. You can choose the 30's or 01a's. The box is simple enough to refinish. Sounds like a fun project.

Hmmm,
It has occurred to me that the radio may have been modified to be a short-wave receiver.. Consider the routing of the wiring that connects to the outboard socket. A shortwave plug in coil may have been used in that socket...

Perhaps, it was modified to connect to an A. C. Dayton-Flewelling short wave adapter?
