Hi,

I got my first "in person" look at an EH Scott radio today. I went ahead and bought it for $350. I hope That was a good deal! :?:

What model is this?
Any common restoration problems with this particular radio?

Looks like the 2 45 tubes are missing from the power supply/amp and the cone is gone from the speaker. Also looks like the chassis itself has been painted with silver paint. Is it oiginally supposed to be chrome? Who do you know that can restore the speaker?

That's an all Wave 12 in a later Tassman cabinet. (There was an early and a later version of the Tassman)
Your cabinet would be correct for this model AW12

There were several versions of the AW12, the main difference being the 3rd tube from the front on the left side.
Early ones used a Wunderlich tube and later versions had a grid cap tube there instead.
I believe these tubes controlled the tuning needle.

The pedistal speaker by itself is worth almost what you paid for the whole set.
It dates to about circa 1932-1933. Note the knob on the back too.
Its sort of a tone control

PS-It looks like you have the optional SW tuner option on the right side of the cabinet also.

Thanks for the info!

I checked and it does have the Wunderlich tube installed.

There is a hole just below the metal pointer knob on the front that has a metal insert. I can see the chassis thru this hole. Was there something that used this hole?
:?: :?

That small hole was used on the later AW15's for a SW tuning whistle control button.
That tells me your cabinet may have been a later one as the AW15 was a circa 1934 model chassis.
Their cabinets were offered over several model years, especially the Tassman like yours.
The AW15 had a wider tuner window though with a 4 colored plastic window. One color for each band.

You should record the serial number off the chassis at the EH Scott web site here:

You did very well with that purchase. A fellow regularly lists the correct cone for that speaker on eBay for $25.00 plus shipping. Hopefully the voice coil and spider are present and good. The third tube back on the left is the detector tube. The later versions used a type 55 tube rather than the Wunderlich tube in your chassis. The small hole under the bandswitch is for a beat oscillator switch introduced with the subsequent model, Allwave Fifteen. At the time the beat oscillator was used to assist with finding and tuning in weak stations. Given the presence of the hole, the cabinet was likely manufactures or modified at some time after your radio chassis were originally purchased. However, on occasion EH Scott Radio Laboratories would take older models in trade and resell them in later cabinets.

You mentioned an optional SW tuner option. I'm assuming thats the assembly mounted on the right side of the cabinet. There is a big tuning cap and a tubular black goodie that has a shaft to turn, some kind of variable inductor? The wires don't go anywhere. Where can I find a schematic showing how the option hooks up? I have a schematic from the Radio Museum website but it does not show the option!
Also I see a tuning meter in the schematic but dont see one anywhere on the radio???

How many coil sets did you get with it?

Somebody correct me if Im wrong but isnt that a later single dialer model? Mine is the 1931 two dialer.

Hi,

I don't see any coil sets with it? :?:

Also there is not any storage spot for coils.

Where would they plug in so I can see if at least I have one?

This is the single dial AW12, it has the rotating coil assembly under the chassis rather than plug-in coils the two-dial version used.

Helluva find!

The Wunderlich tube is used as a 2nd detector and for AVC. The AVC performance with the Wunderlich for AVC is in a league by itself.
The Wunderlich is rare, but they're often for sale on the Scott website previously listed. Fortunately, the Wunderlich tube is doggedly reliable.
You have a great radio.
