Hello all! I have a friend who just picked up one of these and I want to buy it from him. It's complete, but the top is water mottled and stained. It sounds decent, but the volume crackles badly and cuts out a bit. It has been worked on, somebody has wired a fuse into the main cord going into the chassis, I don't know what else has been done. What should I offer him? I've never bought a chairside before so I have nothing to compare it to for price.
Thanks, Alex.

1005 is a chassis number, not a model number, are you talking about a 10-S-452 like this?

Exactly that. Sorry, it said model 1005 on the cabinet. I thought it was the proper one.

I bought one of these 2 years ago in similar condition. It required me to completely strip the cabinet and refinish it, as well as buy another chassis since someone had hacked the transformer and tried changing the rectifier setup. It worked, but it was a disaster. I paid $125 for the whole radio, and then $75 for another chassis. If everything is there, I'd go $200. It's a beautiful cabinet, but only after it has been completely restored. In the condition it's in, it's a lot of work.

Yeah, the front of it is in great condition but the top is bad. I guess no-one thought of coasters for their drinks. :x
I really don't know what's been done to the chassis short of pulling it. I know about the fuse but that's it.

The 1005 is a common chassis so if you do run into bugaboos or odd parts needs its easy enough to find replacements. Its used in a couple of console models as well.

I have the chairside. I like it, its a good, interesting radio. If it needs refurbed that all affects the cost. Nasty rubber wiring to the front panel switches might need to be addressed. UV dry out of the knobs and tuning pointer can sometimes be an issue.

$200 isn't a bad price for one in somewhat good condition. Mine (now) also has a fuse holder! That may be a good sign indicating the previous repair guy had a clue.

Not seeing the radio and it sounds like alot of question marks I wouldn't pay over $75.00 plus it has the newer style Zenith dial which is a negative. JMO

I has offered $75 and was shot down quickly. I had forgotten about the rubber degrading in those chassis, I will have to bring that up in negotiations. At least the dial and knobs are in good nick.

Now the trick is to find room...

By the way, what is the "automatic" feature on the lever assembly?

This radio has station presets, the tabs on the right side of the dial face. You put it to automatic to use the presets.
This also has a wave magnet inside. Make sure that is there. I have Zeniths from 1935 to 1940, and the 1940 is the one I play most. The wave magnet does a great job pulling in stations, and the tone controls (radiorgan) really give the radio a great sound.

I think this seller is trying to take advantage of you because of your lack of knowlege about this radio. Plenty more Zeniths out there, especially the 1940's rotten wire chassis's.

Alex,

Since it's your friend that is the seller, I doubt that they are trying to take advantage of you.

Some folks look at the world in a very narrow perspective , they don't have the ability to see things through other peoples eyes. I live in Pa , ( east coast USA) , where radios are not that difficult to find at reasonable prices.

You live in Victoria, Vancouver Island , finding a Zenith chair side of that type maybe very difficult, if near impossible in your area .
If you really like that model Zenith go for it . It will be a nice sounding and good looking radio when done .

I assume you are not buying just to resell .

Ask your friend what he thinks it's worth and maybe you two can come to an agreement you will both be happy with . I would pay 150.00 or more if it was something I really wanted.

Life isn't always about getting a deal . Sometimes it's getting something to make you happy :D

Good luck David

Pretty scarce radio model. I paid $125 for mine 20 years ago and it has some veneer problems in the speaker grill. It was certainly not a 'concentration' set like the 10S464 (which probably accounted for 2/3 of all sets employing the model 1005 chassis-IMO).

Many consider the 1940 dial not quite as appealing as the 1936 thru 1939 Zeniths, but they are still quite collectible.

He usually buys things to resell and sometimes puts stupid prices on them. He thinks it's worth $500+ :(
And David, your right. Here it's almost impossible to find a zenith radio anywhere let alone a chairside. I practically got mugged at the radio club here when I showed off my 6-J-230.

Alex you will have to decide what is the most you are willing to pay for the radio , and make an offer .

Now that we know your friends just flipping the radio all you have to do is let him make a profit that will make him happy.

This is a decision only you can make . It should be based on how badly you want the radio and the likely hood of ever finding another .

Yes this model has crumbly wire to deal with , but that should not be problem , it's not that big a deal or deal breaker

I'll make room for Ya,

Ship that "W"estinghouse my way. :D

I'll give Ya Zeniths. I'll pack up the 9-S-367 shutterdial I got at the Extravaganza with the "Art Deco" Zephyr styling in the same packaging the "W"estinghouse arrives in. So make sure you pack it well for me.

Oh, don't worry, the 367 has that "automatic" feature & those preset pushbutton "thingies" you like so much.

Seriously though,
Don't Even set that Thing Anywhere CLOSE to the "W"estinghouse.

Thanks all. Somehow I don't think I'm getting rid of my Westinghouse anytime soon. Although I shudder to think what the shipping might be on it... it's a heavy bugger. :D
I'll see what I can do for the chairside. I love it, I want it, but I might not have the money for it. I can always make the room, but it might make too much room in my wallet.
