I don't want to divert the topic, but would it be straightforward to build a set along these lines? I don't mean a replica, more something that looks early 20's and has similar performance and circuit. It looks simple, probably deceptive. The trickiest thing maybe is reproducing the coils?

I just want to add to my post just above, that it interests me a lot with these early sets that some are exceptional performers.
"The Federal DX-58 is actually a very sensitive and selective regenerative receiver. It will blow the sox off of most any of the common Neutrodyne 5-tube 3-dialers out there, likely including the much praised Grebe Synchrophase. The didn't call it "DX" for nothing!"

Why is this? No RF and two AF? The coils don't seem particularly low loss .... is it just that the design and quality of build is so good?
Just what is it they got right?
