I'm trying to ID an unknown radio. It's a 1930's 4-tube BC only (maybe TRF?). The tubes are 57, 58, 80, 2A5. The decal on the front says "Peerless" and the brass escutcheons behind each knob each say "Kennedy" but searches on those names have turned up nothing. I found a Colin Kennedy m#55 which was close (used 47 instead of 2A5) but it was two bands. Would Larsen's help with some possible model numbers for this set? Thanks.
------------------
Vinton Roush
Fairfield, OH

Hi Vinton
Might be one of those Los Angeles made radios. Gilfillan made 4 tube radios for a lot of companies. Try Model 30, Rider 5-3.

------------------
Norm

Thanks, Norm. The model 30 I found at Nostalgia Air shows a 6-tube chassis while mine is a 4-tube.
------------------
Vinton Roush
Fairfield, OH

Hi Vinton
I sent you a copy of Gilfillan Model 30 schematic. Nostalgiaair has the wrong schematic under that model. See if it matches your radio.
------------------
Norm

Thanks, Norm. The Gilfillan set certainly has the same tube complement as my radio. I noticed my radio uses a dual-section filter cap block, 5uf/8uf@600v. The Gilfillan schematic is hard to read but looks like the filter caps are 4uf@450v (looks like C7 & C8 are listed as electrolytics but I don't see C7 inn the circuit). Can I get by using 450v units as replacements? What is that that's connected between C4 and the field coil
------------------
Vinton Roush
Fairfield, OH

Vinton
The highest voltage shown is 190. Your original filter block was probably paper rather than electrolytic. You can use 10 mfd @ 450 volt electrolytics.
Don't think anything is connected between the two points mentioned. Notice plus & minus are marked with what looks like the word volts on a line with arrows pointing to these two places. Think it was a place to take a voltage reading.
------------------
Norm

Thanks once again, Norm. I'm sure I'll be back to the well on this one. And, I have another unidentified radio to figure out, too -- heck, that's half the fun!
------------------
Vinton Roush
Fairfield, OH

WOW, tdb, thanks! That will keep me busy for a while.
Would yo mind looking up my other mystery set? It's a 5-tube, series-wired, single band TRF set with tubes 36, 37, 43, 39/44, 25Z5. Those are the original tubes used, as the tubes #'s are stamped on the sockets.
------------------
Vinton Roush
Fairfield, OH

For tubes 43, 25Z5, 39, 36, 37:
Empire 4-2
Plaza 3-1
For tubes 43, 25Z5, 39, 37, 36:
Insuline 2-8
The first tube listed is the audio output, then the rectifier and then the tubes are listed from the antenna forward. A 44 tube is not listed with these other tubes. I did not verify any of these or the last ones by looking at my Riders.
I have been looking for a radio that I used to have (my first radio as a kid) but there are more the 50 choices and I am not positive about the tubes. This book is from Riders 2 – 18. It was compiled by:
Gerald Larsen
7841 W. Elmgrove Dr.
Elmwood Park, IL. 60635
I do not know if he is still selling it – it was very reasonable when I bought it!!!!
Good Luck again
tdb

------------------
Thanks again. I understand that Mr. Larsen has passed away, but that possibly his widow has begun selling the manual again. Thanks for the leads. They will prove most helpful, I'm sure.
------------------
Vinton Roush
Fairfield, OH

The 39 and 44 tubes had almost identical chsrscteristics and so were replaced by type 39/44.
Don Black.
------------------
