A long shot, I know. I posted this query a few years ago and got no replies then either. This is my holy grail of receivers. Supposedly a four tube ('99s) shortwave with the tubes mounted upside down and the plug-in coils mounted on top like a Grebe CR18. Has anyone ever seen one? Better yet, pictures? Thanks -- Chris

Thanks for the links. I've never seen those.

The ads reference a list price of $75.00 so, if true, maybe this is why they're never seen as the Pilot Super Wasp had the same specs but at half the price. Still, I'd like to think that an example or two exist in somebody's collection... somewhere.

Hi Chris,
This summer we were invited to pick up Jack Poppele's estate (station WOR), and when we opened up one of his
storage units, this set was sitting on a table covered with dust & a group of plug in coils in a box on the floor. Next to
it sat a number of early Western Electric microphones, receivers and tubes.

It was the first time I had ever set eyes on the real McCoy! Back in the 80's I remember seeing a shabby attempt of a
repro over at Phil Weingarten's laboratory, but it was not a very good job- the poor engraving gave it away immediately.

As I recall, there were some notes in pencil on the top, regarding the coils & possibly a date.

I don't think many were sold, as I haven't seen any show up in many years of contests at AWA, ARCI and Charlotte.

We will have it on display at the AWA museum this summer, in our soon-to-be built amateur radio wing.

Merry Christmas to All !!

73 Jim

While going thru my personal file cabinets I found the original operating instructions as well
as a letter from the DeForest Co. offering the CS-5 to a prospective buyer. The interior of the
set is shown on the front cover.

Jack Poppele was a lifelong friend of Lee DeForest, which might account why he acquired
such an uncommon receiver.

Has anybody else ever seen one of these?
