I've been looking for one of these for awhile, found this one on Craigslist and went to pick it up this morning. Seller was taking offers, I offered $200 and he accepted; he told me after I bought it that he'd later had a $275 offer but wanted to honor the commitment he'd already made to me, so turned that offer down. Standup guy, I have no reason to doubt him as he was very friendly and open.
Anyway, the set has some problems but there is good news! First, the bad:
Speaker is shot. Open field coil, busted cone, disattached/open voice coil, bad half of output transformer primary. Pretty much toast.
ONe of the globe 45 filaments is open.
The cabinet has some veneer slivers missing, a split section and a section of the repwood is cracked. But overall, the set looks nice and is solid. The repwood is solid too.
The chassis had been serviced, but the cord was cut. Opened it up and found some disattached leads and caps that clearly do not belong (200uf???); not getting continuity on one leg of the HV secondary, but I only checked very briefly.

THE GOOD NEWS:
I have a good friend in NH who also collects/ restores radios. He has LOTS of sets. Sent him a photo of the radio this morning and about five minutes later got a text back with a few photos. Turns out he bought a restored S5 chassis and speaker in a lot from a radio repairman in Keene, NH, a few years ago and was holding onto it to find a cabinet. The chassis looks close to mint and the speaker is perfect. We're going to work out some kind of a barter arrangment and he's packing the stuff to send to me straightaway. So that's nice; I won't have to spend big bucks getting the speaker fixed and (possibly) trying to find a new power transformer. Great guy! Very happy to add the set to my collection.

I think you still did well - even with the speaker and coil that are toast. It's also good to see some people are still true to their word. These sets are hard to find in any condition and I think the cabinet doesn't look too bad. It's even better that your buddy had a spare chassis and speaker.

Congratulations! This one's a keeper.

Nice catch, Ted!

I think you did great for $200 and some bartering for a working chassis.

Thanks! Incredibly lucky. Have been looking for one for years. Find one with a trashed chassis and speaker, find the correct chassis and speaker the same day. When it rains it pours.

Nice looking radio Ted.
Funny ,I saw that on line recently .I would not have said Craig's list though. The break in the grill stuck in my mind.
