I have spent 4 winters in Florida, and I have to say, it is NOT a goldmine for radios... I think most nice sets are left behind when people retire here..just my guess. But lady luck was upon me today, as I found a decent 12S471 Zenith in a quonset hut on the outskirts of Ft. Myers, and brought it home for $45.... It is all there, has all the tabs and knobs, but will need a restoration, as these sets really pop when re-done. I've seen them over the years for sale, but never had the chance at one at a dirt cheap price. As you know, this set is one of the top designs Zenith made, IMHO.

That radio is one of my favorites. I've been lucky enough to have two of them, and I still have one proudly displayed in my home. They are great playing radios. If you decide to refinish the cabinet you will be amazed at all of the beautiful wood underneath the original finish.

One question for you. There is a black dial, a gold dial and a blue dial. The blue dial usually fades to a silvery color. What condition is yours in?

Good luck with this one. You got it for a great price and you'll love it when it's restored!
Here is a picture of mine.

The blue is a distant memory, as most of them are..lol My darth vader same story. Yes, I know what is under the grime..it is worth the effort. Yours is real nice btw... I know noone is making the correct grillcloth, and mine is toast, so I have to decided on an alternate. Probably the swirl...

12-S-471 . . . one of my favorite numbers! Here are some restoration notes from when I redid one about 15 years ago:

thanks for the posts guys..I am looking forward to getting this gal looking like she should. The banded veneers are stunning and add pizzazz to an already sweet looking design.

You got a great deal there, as that set in unrestored condition can easily bring several hundred! I have the one my parents bought brand new and it is an exceptional performer. Hope the power transformer is still good, but on a radio that valuable it wouldn't matter, you just go ahead and fix whatever is wrong.

Nice find. One of my favorite Zeniths, and will be one of the last I part with.

Mine came to me with the finish stripped. I refinished it with Mohawk rattle can lacquer.

I recall seeing a thread with a source for the original grill cloth pattern for this radio. If I can find it I will post it.

Re lacquer, I have refinished many cabinets (including the 12-S-471) using spray cans of Mohawk lacquer. Available from many online sources.

If you want your refinished cabinet to look authentic, then it will not have strongly contrasting veneer bands. The factory used toning lacquer (colored lacquer) to even out the color across the whole cabinet and make it look uniform. Your first photo shows approximately the colors that you're aiming for -- a pretty uniform color for the body of the cabinet and somewhat darker color around the lower perimeter.

Here is my 12-S-471 on the day I bought it, with an untouched original finish:

When I refreshed the finish, I did my best to preserve the original colors, not making them lighter or more contrast-y.

This page at RM shows another 12-S-471 with what looks like an original finish:

https://www.radiomuseum.org/r/zenith_12 ... h1207.html

If you strip off all the old finish down to bare wood (which is often not necessary, by the way), and then spray on clear finish without any toner, then you'll have a cabinet that's much too light and too contrast-y. That appearance might make it "pop" in an antique store showroom, but it's not what Zenith built or intended. It's your radio, anyhow, so you're free to do whatever you like.

Nice find Mark! :D

I've always loved the style of the 12-S-471

When this one came up for grabs at $225 I was on it immediately :D

As for the dial, not much blue left of mine either.

-Steve

Very nice find. Maybe not a lot of work on the cabinet as it looks in pretty good shape. There isn't squat for radios in SE Fla. Most of the transplants in SE Fl come from NJ,NY,Mass area and are downsizing to a 2-3BR condo and don't have the room. So they get rid of large and small pieces before coming. The west coast is more laid back with people coming from the Midwest down I75 to retire. Over here we have these massive 20 story condos everywhere. Get south of Sarasota and you don't see anything like what we have. They seem to go for 1 story homes and have more room and can keep a lot of pieces they've had for years. Maybe I should start looking over there.

Good luck with you'r new project.
Freeman.

It looks like they borrowed a couple of elements from Midwest on that one.

Wow..some really nice ones here..thanks guys for posting them. I hope to have mine looking a lot better within a week. Spending more for materials than the radio cost me, for sure. Steve.. your original finish one still seems to have some pop in the fancy veneer. Lucky to get that!..Most I see, the old lacquer and nicotine hides that. Zenith had some real nice trim veneers back then.
