It may be it costs a lot to have the custom cloths made? I don't know what the seller is up against.
I doubt he is making a huge profit on it all.

I have no connection to the seller and haven't seen that cloth in person, but two things come immediately to mind.

As Steve pointed out it's an extremely limited market as that cloth is pretty much set specific, and it cost a significant amount to have it custom woven in a small quantity, so the seller is entitled to recover the costs of setting up to have it made and make a little profit. No doubt that is where the price is coming from.

Also, this is certainly one of the more valuable and most desirable Zeniths ever made. You got it for an unbelievably low price, but the set once restored properly and to original appearance can easily sell for $1000 or possibly much more to the right buyer depending on the venue you offer it in. Cutting corners by changing to an incorrect grille cloth might work on a less valuable or less desirable radio, but you should think twice before doing so on this radio. Even if you put it on display in your own living room, you will always look at it and realize that the cloth isn't original and correct for the radio.

It's kind of like restoring a vintage car, the cosmetic stuff that's easily seen like trim and chrome can cost a fortune to get redone, but makes all the difference in the final appearance of the finished project. On a radio, the finish, grille cloth, dial scale and knobs are very important and anything incorrect or not properly done can greatly affect the value.

I agree about getting it right...thats why I asked if anyone had bought it. It is actually $83.20..and if it is a perfect repro, then fine I suppose...but if not...well, we have all seen lousy repro stuff.....plus the guy is overseas.... Yes, I got it cheap, but hey, I wanted to keep it cheap..lol. If anyone has bought this cloth, please let me know how happy you are with it, and the seller. I do really apprerciate the link Doc..I am sure you understand the concerns here.

The cabinet is coming along nicely.... toners are on now, tomorrow is grain fill, a touch more stain and steel wool to erase any tape glue from masking, and then decals, ...and then lacquer. Humidity is low right now in Florida..a gift from the radio gods. I did in fact order the expensive grill cloth, because you are right..I would stare at it and know it was wrong...lol.

I have spent 4 winters in Florida, and I have to say, it is NOT a goldmine for radios... I think most nice sets are left behind when people retire here..just my guess. But lady luck was upon me today, as I found a decent 12S471 Zenith in a quonset hut on the outskirts of Ft. Myers, and brought it home for $45.... It is all there, has all the tabs and knobs, but will need a restoration, as these sets really pop when re-done. I've seen them over the years for sale, but never had the chance at one at a dirt cheap price. As you know, this set is one of the top designs Zenith made, IMHO.

Beautiful radio, I am in Florida visiting my brother, you are right not a great place to find antique radio's, price's are a little high for me. Although I did find one in Punta Gorda, and going to look at one in Bradenton. Still this is a great hobby. Live in Michigan stopping in Tennessee at some antique shops.

Good news and bad news... I took everyones advice and ordered the grill cloth from the netherlands. It is lost in the mail, "undeliverable, incomplete address" according to tracking. I gave the guy the correct address 3 times, clear as a bell.
The good news is the radio is looking very good.
