This one was an accident.
I was cleaning the dial face of my EICO VTVM and used a green scrubber on it , figuring I would polish it out with some fine grade wet/dry sandpaper later. Of course it made the plastic look cloudy from the fine scratches.
I had the unit at work and I was a little bored so I took a piece of paper towel and put a very small amount of acetone on it. I then quickly rubbed out the plastic dial face with the acetone damp towel using continuous motion and pressure-- and it eneded up putting a very nice polish on it!
It was also very clean :D

I finished off with Novus #3, #2 and #1 for a crystal clear resotration.

Anyone willing to confirm this on something they can spare if it backfires? I'm going to play around with it and report back.
Ben

I use acetone on screwdriver handles that have nicks and gouges on them. On sheet plastic I have found that it is best to just dip it quickly, let the excess acetone drain off, then hold it until it is dry. It's not perfect, but better than nothing.

Remembering that acetone is a solvent for some plastics and will eat some right up. If given enough time.

It's dangerous to get 'comfy' with acetone as it can be very unpredictable. It'll instantly dissolve some plastics, yet others wouldn't do a thing if submerged in it.

The only time I get comfy with acetone is when I inhale too much
I agree though, it's a powerful solvent and should be respected as such. I like to push the boundaries of substances to find new uses in radio restoration.

On an old episode of "How Its Made" on tv, they were showing the manufacture of screwdrivers with clear plastic handles. I was surprised to see the final polishing step was a dip in an acetone bath.
