I have accidentally cracked a black knob on a a very old Hickok meter. Not sure if it's plastic or bakelite. It's still just hanging together but needs to be glued or it will surely break all the way with use. I want to be able to glue it and not see an obvious repair. I was wondering if there is a safe way to quickly wipe off any exess Super Glue before it dries and shows an ugly residue around the glue line. I know water is not the answer.
Or perhaps I could just use Elmers and wipe it up with warm water before it dries but don't know if that would be a good strong bond.

Super glue on the inside of knob using a toothpick so you can control the amount of glue. Loctite super glue is a good product, quick drying.

Acetone can be used on a cotton swab to remove excess super glue. Use it only on bakelite plastics, though. If you are unsure of the type of plastic you are working with, don't use it. It will also remove dried super glue. be careful, as it will soften the repaired joint with too much exposure.
