Need insulated pliers? Shrink tubing!
Have an F connector that is in a hard to reach place, you have trouble getting a grip on it, and there's no room for a wrench? Shrink Tubing!

Have you ever ordered replacement ear loops for your bluetooth, ones stated as fitting your make and model, only to find that the clips were a little too large, so instead of gripping the mounting point they spin as lithely as Bobby Orr on the Boston Garden ice? Shrink tubing!

Nice old pair of battery pliers there. I see you have found another use for them.

They belonged to my Dad, he was using them up until a couple years ago, he had them probably for more than 50 years. Now he's too old to want to work on his truck anymore so he gave them to me.

I use it to extend spray bottle uptake tubes so they go all the way to the bottom of the spray bottle. The last two spray bottles of 409 cleaner had the uptake tube 1" from the bottom, making it impossible to empty the spray bottle. One piece of heat shrink over the lower end of the uptake tube, and voila - an extension.

We put heat shrink over the end of all coax cables on our TV benches - one touch of a grounded f-fitting to a hot chassis set, and kaboom....

Cheers,

Having a problem getting a nut into a tight place?
Heat shrink the nut into the end of some HS tubing.
Don't shrink it down too tight or deep. Works real good for those tight corners or areas like around IFT's.
Also an emergency "straw "or eyedropper for chemicals. (No, not for your cold 807's either  )
I extended a funnel to add AFT to my car with some also.
You can enlarge a control shaft with it also in an emergency., and make an emergency insulated shaft coupling.

Years ago before the age of "carbon consciousness" our metrology instrument cal/repair shop used to have a freezer containing a large chunk of dry ice. This was available to the tech for the purpose of chasing temp-sensitive electronics issues. This was "free stock" stuff meaning that anyone could walk up to the freezer and help himself to as much dry ice as he needed.

Also in "free stock" were various sizes of heatshrink tubing. Some bored tech on the nightshift discovered that if you inserted a large sliver of dry ice in a length of one-inch-diameter heatshrink tubing, then welded the ends closed with a bag heat sealer, you had yourself a dandy time bomb. One of these furtively placed in a co-worker's bench toolbox would take several minutes to heat up, then let go with a !!!BANG!!! that was worthy of an M-80.

Even more dramatic was the result when one of these things was placed in the break room's microwave oven. The unsuspecting person who had just walked up wanting to warm up his cheese Danish was treated to an almighty BANG followed by a dense cloud of white vapor boiling out of every opening on the oven.

Not long after this amusement became popular among the nightshift techs, management decided to replace the dry ice chest with a gas cylinder of CO2... no doubt a coincidence.

This isn't far from the case. My father in law is a vascular surgeon. They use similar tubing to fix aortic and other vascular aneurysms. What's scarier is that he does it on one day and you go home the next. His view is that the aneurysm repair is less likely to fail than you getting an infection at the hospital that you cannot recover from.

I used about an inch and a half length to secure the broken spring hinges on my glasses. I shoved the end piece back into the hinge slot, held it there while holding it over the heat from a stove burner or lighter. It stayed. It's held up very well, going on 6 months now. I can no longer fold my glasses, but saved me an optometrist bill.

Thought you were supposed to use athletic tape for that? /jk

Another use is to limit the amount of mechanical ignition advance on the reluctor arms of old style Kettering engine distributors.

I've had some success using clear PVC tubing of the right size to insulate the steel handles of various pliers and side-cutters.
Cheers,
Roger
Edit: Picture added. Not heat shrink, of course, so a bit OT!

Like a little more cushion to your pliers handle covers?
Use clear vinyl plastic tubing instead of heat shink.

Ooops, I see engineer beat me to the punch on this one.

The helper to put that extra few inch length of tubing on the pump top for a taller bottle.

Put over nylon, poly or hemp rope loops to prevent unweaving, has always worked even in severe service. (large, heavy heatshrink).
