Just saw this resurrected thread: earlier this year I used the shoelace method. Old electric fans use a cloth-covered twisted pair from the base to the motor (the "headwire.") I made one up by twisting two lengths of stranded hookup wire together, and covering with a black shoelace. Looks just like the damaged original.
