Kirk,
Hand me the gun!

Actually, I really like the cabinet, but that era of Zenith dial doesn't thrill me...

Strictly a set that is only worth getting if you just want a set to use every day. One thing I like about these is the light inside the phono area. Amazing how Zenith totally gave up on the artistic tasteful console cabinets after about 1940.

What's not to hate about it? Ugly cabinet, phono, horrible chassis, crowded with lots of crumbling rubber insulation.

Don't forget the Spam can power transformers that have a high instance of committing suicide.

I really really hate that cabinet. It's your standard deco/streamlined styled cabinet except for the pair of dolphin fin doors which open and close. How stupid looking but then that's just my opinion.

When I went to look at the pictures and went from the first to second photo with doors open it reminded me of somebody with hands over mouth and then taking them away screaming "BUUWHAAAAA" Yes sir, that is one homely looking cabinet that would never follow me home.

I like it!

But then again, I'm not the average antique radio collector.

I have a huge collection of misfits, I guess that makes me a mistit too? :|

Not at all Steve. Each to his own opinion. As collectors we are a least a little eccentric, which is fine. The definition of "art" is "the appreciation of ordinary things". We are artists! :D

Sorry, Steve, I'm with everyone else in hating it. I think that radio is quite ugly.

There's certain radios that have an ugly style but still have some twist that makes you appreciate them. That radio just looks cheap all over, no love was put into designing it.

As Joe says though, to each their own - I'm sure it was bought back in the day by someone who appreciated the style.

+1. Weird is an honorific, not a detriment. Look at all the normal people around you. Wish them the best and all that, but why the hell would you want to be like them?

You know what they say - "Anyone you know who you think is "normal", you probably don't know very well! :D

BTW, This is a model 7-S-585. It is a 1941 model with a 1940 style slide rule dial.

That said, what intrigues me about it is the fact it has a full 6 button Radiorgan tone control over the usual two button escutcheon you commonly see with this dial. It also is a transformer set rather than a series string model.

I used to have a model 7-S-487 which is very similar in style, with the phonograph behind two doors, but it has a flat top rather than the shouldered style seen here, which I feel adds to the style.

Bob (Joybird) was working on a 7-S-487 some time back and I was helping him a bit with information.
In the end I offered the radio to him and he bought it from me.
God rest his soul. :(

Whatever you guy feel, I've seen far uglier radios than this one~!

The ugly part is the small congested chassis underside with loads of crumbling rubber wire.

Not my cup of tea, but if you like it, go for it. I don’t like the fact that you can’t rotate the wavemagnet unless you turn the whole radio. Kind of useless if you ask me. I have owned a chair side and a table top that had the same setup with a fixed Wavemagnet and i got rid of them.

Frankly, somehow they took pictures outside and got the radio so dark, it makes for a rather difficult judgment for anyone who is not familiar with the model. As for me, some of the 35-39 models look just right and some of the others look similar but just miss the mark by that much in cosmetics.
