Glad someone from here grabbed it, i bet its a nice sounding unit.
good luck with it
It's powerful, yes.
It's laden with controls and snazzy, yes.
It's heavy as hell, yes.
But....
The
cabinet design is bad for the reason that the actual depth of the speaker chamber up top is SHALLOW. - maybe 8 inches deep inside.
This design inhibits the bass response terribly, even with those two 12 inch woofers.
The back is sealed, 3/4 inch plywood, and the only venting is through two small "ports" in the front center panel. - PLUS the woofers fire through a half-moon opening, furthering poor bass.
You can see it in the photo.
I used to have to turn the bass control up FULL to get even marginal bass out of that monster.
While RCA Victor advertized "ear level sound" with these hutch models, and the idea was cute, the design was bad.
THAT is why I chopped the cabinet up and used the guts in another RCA cabinet that accomidated deeper speaker chambers.
And the result is booming deep bass now, with guts that were the highlight of development in RCA's tube consoles.
Anybody who gets these hutches should at least pilfer the guts out.
