I saw this and actually had a minor interest.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... TQ:US:1123

So I asked for pictures of the electronics.

Here is the answer I got.

This radio is in perfect working order. Therefore, we are not prepared to open it up at all.

The price of $495 is a total bargin for this radio, I can assure you.

If you have any other questions, please let me know.

Regards

What a putz!

I expect this radio to sell for over $1000.00. However, I am starting the bidding at under $500.00.

Actually I don't think he was that much out of line; given that the set is a modern-day replica, it's a certainty that the electronics consist of a PC board with solid state components and either discrete Transistors and/or IC's. IOW, nothing out of the ordinary.

Of course there are only about a half dozen screws holding the back cover on...

Call me confused. I wish he would let us see the insides!

In one photo you can see the back edge and it does look like a wood cabinet. I don't know why he's using the term 'replica' unless it actually is. I can't tell and researching the model doesn't yield any clues.

I'm thinking its for real and if so the $500 price would be a steal. But I'm not a gambler.

I agree. That doesn't look like a replica to me, but are those the original knobs?

There was an interesting comment in a thread concerning those ADS 65 radios.

"You should not be suprised either by an original Ekco AD65 chassis being found inside, as he used these from damaged or tatty sets bought over a number of years and they were used for the reproductions."

Thanks Curtis. Now I'm convinced its a Gerry Wells replica. That explains a lot.

It might sell IF he properly put a good title on his auction.
I went to the UK forum and it seems the original really sold for very high bucks
So i got it on my watch list and see what happens

Curtis --

Very informative link. It talks of duplicates being made with a resin/glass mixture as well as wood replicas made by Gerry Wells. This thread (linked from the thread you posted) has more discussion about the wood replicas made by Wells. This might be why the seller refers to it as a wood radio.

Pretty amazing work. :shock:

Well, doing some research, here is apparently what an original looks like (notice the knobs);

And here is what the guts look like;

The seller has now posted pictures on the chassis. Simple 4 tube, 220V I assume.

Chassis signed by Wells.

So what does anyone think about value?
