I just bumped this back up due to a recent flurry of activity on new parts kit orders for it.

Just ordered a kit from Bill (thanks Bill!) and sorry for the noob question (likely the first of several), but would there be any adverse effects putting an indicator lamp between the power switch and the transformer?
Thanks.

bootzilla: Why not just use an LED (NTE 3025), and connect it between the B+ and the load? It'll work just fine that way as the circuit current draw would be below the LED rating. Just be sure to observe the proper polarities: The anode should be connected to the B+ with the cathode connected to the load.
As for the enclosure, I would suggest a Hammond 1591XXEBK project box (available from Mouser). You could place the P.S. in the first half of the enclosure with the audio/oscillator section in the second half.

Todd. . Not if you like flash bulbs... Since there is no 6v supply in this Tx, you could use something like a #313 or #1819 connected across the 24V winding, these bulbs are 28v...

Thanks - both of those ideas make more sense. I'm not sure which would be easier, but going between load and B+ would probably lessen my chances of wiring something wrong in the PS.
Could I use a neon lamp instead of an LED? I'm thinking of building a wooden box for everything, and I think an neon lamp would look good.

You can use a neon lamp across primary of the transformer. Be sure to add a series resistor if using a neon lamp. 100K should be ok.
Bulbs Tom mentioned would be ok but added expense.
How many have built the 12AV6/12CS6 transmitter?

I have built two of these transmitters out of junker radio cabinets and chassis. One out of a Zenith clock radio, Clock still works great. The other out of a rusted and busted Philco. I added an LED in series with B+ to both. Attachment:

I have also built the 6LE8. Attachment:

All have a range of about 200 feet.

Nice usage of otherwise junk radios...
Well lessee, you have two and I've helped a couple forum members on theirs in the last week, bootzilla is building one and I built one, that accounts for six... No doubt there are others...

_________________ Norm ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- I have got one order per week for 5 weeks now for parts kits. All newbies I think. At least new to homebrewing. The 12AV6/12CS6 is the only parts kit I have now. I suggested to all to post pics as they build. My guess is well over several hundred of 6888's of all kinds out there now.
Norm,
Help me guess the number of 12AV6/12CS6 parts kits out there by using a power transformer count. I have 4 in stock.
Bill

Bill
Believe most times I've sent you 12. The first time might have been 10 with another different type. I mailed transformer 3 times. You probably received 34?
In another post you mentioned 6CB6. I don't remember discussing 6CB6 but they can be triode conneced and used in 6C4/6AB4 circuit. Could even pentode connect them for more gain. Good to design around 6CB6 as there is no shortage of tubes...

_________________ Norm ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I'll bet that you hit the nail on the head Norm. I was probably whinning and crying about the cost of 6C4 for 6GY6 parts kits at the time. 35Z5 probably came up with the 6CB6 idea. Then, 35Z5 came up with the 12AV6 as the ultimate tube because they are in every AA5 carcus.

Norm has mentioned the 6CB6 to me in PMs a few times but I've never seriously worked with it, don't remember recommending it... I have old jukebox amp that has a 6AG5 added as a preamp for a magnetic cartridge, no doubt any of those early IF amp tubes should be fine and are in abundance... Unfortunately they can't be used in the 12AV6/12CS6 Tx version, as the heater voltage & current isn't compatible... To be practical, these types would need to be used with a parallel heater circuit...

I do remember buying them on ebay and I think I knew at the time that they might not be able to work with 6GY6 as it was never looked at. They were just very cheap at the time and enough of a qty to get parts kits going if they had worked out.

The original 6LE8 members are now coming home to roost! All report trouble free long term service from their 6LE8 broadcasters. They have a hankerin to homebrew the 12AV6/12CS6 now and some are mentoring. Now I'm out of Xtals and Xformers which is a good thing!

Hey there homebrewers Got my kit in the mail today from Bill (well, except the transformer) and looking forward to building this. I'll post photos along the way. Thanks to all for developing the concept - I looked at quite a few AM transmitters, pre-built and kits but reading the reviews from 35Z5 convinced me to select this one. I'm going to need to build the alternate frequency version because I have a station on 1000khz about three miles away.

"How many have built the 12AV6/12CS6 transmitter?"
I built one a few months ago, and it works fine. I placed the 12AV6/12CS6 transmitter upstairs in a bedroom/storage area, and have the headphone jack of a Califone boom box connected to it. I regularly broadcast 1930's music from the CD player of that boom box downstairs to the dining room that's picked up by my 1929 Atwater Kent Model 55C radio. What a treasure!
My sister visits my place often, and we find it soothing to listen to that 1930's music from the Atwater Kent radio (especially when we're sipping some red wine).
