I have a Magnavox CR-198C console that uses two 12" field coil speakers. I have two more identical speakers that I would like to run with this console. The field coils would be run on a separate power supply. Could I use just the secondary side of a Hammond 600 ohm to 8/4 ohm transformer (what I have on hand) to provide a lower impedance? The dc resistance of the speakers are 2.5 ohms as two voice coils are in parallel.
Using four speakers will give me a 1.25 ohm load so couldn't I simply connect the 8 ohm tap of the transformer to the output transformer and connect the speakers to the 4 ohm tap with the common going to the ground end of the output transformer?
If there's no feasible way to do this I'll just put those two speakers safely away and keep them as spares should I ever need them.
I did add a couple tweeters to my CR-198C so would have to do the same to the extension speakers which I can easily do as I have the necessary tweeters.
