I have been tinkering with this for a few weeks now and I will start out by saying, Please forgive me as I cannot give the tube line up right now but it does push a pair of 6V6s through a 12", 25 Watt speaker,
This extension speaker didn't have too much Uumph to it without a preamp as the Bell & Howell 16mm projector had.
I wanted it to have some power and volume without breaking the bank,,,, After hunting about I thought I would try one of those single 12AX7 preamp (Headphone Amp) thingies which set me back $29 bucks. After testing I was pretty happy with the results and the tone so I installed it in the box and a switched outlet as well, This unit will be used when my buddy does small car shows on his property and friends share MP3, iPhone files as well as streaming Pandora and the like for the day and this will also offer him the availability to plug in a mic to get everyones attention, (Usually about 50 cars) car show....
I am happy with the sound even though I cheaped out on the Preamp, But for a small portable package which will play just about anything you can plug into it, I thought it turned out pretty well,
Now I just have to clean and glue some loose backing..
Just thought I would share,
Peter

That's wunnatha more modren ones.

I loved the old B&H. In 4th grade I let the teachers try twice to thread the sound drum right before I intervened and sorted it for them. Wasn't that polite of me?

Yes it is a pretty modern one, While I would prefer the older style one, They seem pretty hard to come by with amp already in there and the prices at times seem quite silly. What year do you think? 1955 ?
Anyhow I will finish it up this weekend and it will be ready for a new home, I suppose it would make a fair guitar set, But I don't play and neither do any or my friends, So who will try it out and give feed back?
Thanks folks.
Peter

Maybe a little later than 55. Hard for me to place because I never saw a powered extension B&H speaker.

I was running B&Hs when they weighed more than I did. Just came natural.

Very nice job on the additional amplifier. Normally that amplifier would have been driven from the projector's speaker-level output. If you check the input circuit, you might find that it is shunted by a low-value (7-15 ohm) power resistor which will load down your signal source. I have an Ampro power speaker using PP-6V6s which was that way. I removed the load resistor and now I am able to drive it to very good volume from an iPod.

Your power speaker is newer than 1955. You can tell by the retractable handle, which was the newer style. I'm thinking perhaps 1958-60.

This one too has a load resistor and with in plugged/Unplugged it does play pretty well, But with the little cheepo preamp you can turn it up loud enough and overdrive the speaker from an MP3. I turned it up and the dog went under the bed in the other room, Without the Preamp, plays nice, But no overdriving the tubes or speaker unless there is something I am missing which I would love to know.

I don't know if I was able to overdrive the Ampro power speaker or not from the iPod. We used it last summer for music for an outdoor party. Volume was good enough that it covered the entire backyard while we had to turn it down to avoid making conversation difficult. IIRC the Ampro power speaker (1949 vintage) uses a 6SL7 dual-triode as 1st audio/phase inverter, PP 6V6s, and a 5Y3 rectifier. B&H used 12AX7s widely in the 300-series projectors (era of your amplifier) so if I had to guess I would say 12AX7 1st audio/phase inverter, PP 6V6s, and the same 5Y3 rectifier. Performance should be about the same as the Ampro power speaker which also used a 12 inch speaker.

In the late 1930s B&H had power speakers with much more powerful amplifiers using PP 6L6s.

Looks great Peter! Do you have a link to the 12AX7 preamp site? Looks neat.

Thanks

That B&H "Orchestron" power speaker would definitely have been built around 1959 or so.

When turned all the way up it is truly evil, I was amazed on how loud a single 12" speaker can be and how much you can feel from a couple feet away.. This is why Ii called it the Evil Amp, I am sure when some Guitar guy gets to play on it and see what it can do, Someone will want one bad.
Here is a link to the Preamp,
http://www.behringer.com/EN/Products/MIC200.aspx
There are several companies making basically the same thing in all kind of price ranges, I even saw this one for over $100 and as little as $29.99, I see some now on Ebay at $43.00 but others makers for $29..
While I am no Audiophile and I can't tell a set of RCA 6V6s from a set of Sylvanias like so many others can, I still think this sounds the same as using just a more powerful amp.

If you get an idle 15 minutes, peel the can off the magnet assembly and photo it. They didn't have rare earth magnets back then but they DID have BIG ones.

Must not ever let a guitar guy play his guitar through this amp lest the price of these skyrockets through the roof and the availability becomes very scarce

Had a friend tinkering with it last night with his iPhone plugged into it and just stood there with it at 50% volume and was floored, He was playing some reggae music not agreeing with me, But it sure did impress him....
I personally would like to hear what a good guitar player can do with it, In my house and not at a club

Great job! Sure does bring back memories of junior high and high school in the fifties. We had a 16mm B&H at home and watched a lot of the old DOD films of WWII combat footage. I'd take them to school and run the projector in history class. The teacher loved it--I think he took a nap while we watched the film :D.
