Hi Guys......
Today's garbage picking yielded two homebrew stereo speaker enclosures in real ratty shape. They were maybe built in the early to mid 60's. Upon opening them up I found a 12" University Co-axial Model 6201 speaker and the other contained a 12" Wharfedale Super Model 12/RS/DD. Both speakers checked good for continuity but the University model will need a new surround but the cone is perfect. The Wharfedale is in perfect shape. I checked epay and the University speaker looks to go for about 80 bucks and the Wharfedale for about 150. Do these speakers really go for that much? Should I hang onto the enclosures? They are fibreglass lined but really look like hell on the outside!

The warfdale has a cast frame and an anico magnet and is a fine speaker $100 or more is not out reality . The 6201 had a cloth surround and will have to reconed to be worth much , , being a duplex speaker it was very desirable in the early 50's . If there home made ,fire wood

Wharfedale may have some value, see if it plays OK. The other one marginal since it'll cost more than $15 to get a surround and you won't have a clue until you get if properly set up.
Few people toss out working speakers.

Nope, I picked up the surround (cloth, three-ribbed) plus 2 dust caps and the proper glue for 12 bucks.
My main problem will seem to be cutting the hole in the dust cap so the horn can pass through. I may make it out of felt...what was originally there. Proper spacing of the voice coil may be a bit of a bear because the cone apex passes over the vertical of where the spacing elements go necessitating a right angle bend in the spacers. Oddly, the apex of the cone is terminated with a circular steel ring with an 1 3/4" opening. This is my first coaxial speaker that needed a surround job.

The original was felt on the university sound .The horn should come off so the felt can be replaced . If it doesn't unsrew check for set screws

Exactly Mark....
The horn unscrewed with no problem. I located some red felt in the shop and it should do the trick.
Tnx... ...Jim

Too bad the 6201 doesn't have a match...value goes up exponentially on those. ~$4-500 mark for a pair.
