OK, I have a question for you Marantz guys out there. Yesterday, I purchased at a yard sale two pieces of Marantz equipment. The first one is a Model 2226b receiver with walnut case and the other one is a Model 4230 with a metal wood-grained case. I'm fairly new to this type of equipment. I want to sell one and keep one. Which one is better and worth more? Also, could the wood cabinet be used on either one or is it unique to the Model 2226b (ventilation-wise, etc.) Thanks.

If they are both working i would definitely keep the 2226. To me it is a better looking unit and is a standard two channel stereo. The 4230 is what was called a quad stereo and for some reason the quads never made it big . I was just going to post a question on this subject about a Sansui

Both of them are pure junk. You should ship them to me so I can dispose of them properly. Don't bother to thank me.

I think it's only quad if you put in a quad adapter.

Don't waste any time on quad stuff. No program material.

Look on the bottom of 4230 and see if it has the decoder module. they are valuable.
BTW I am looking for one.
I would keep the 4230 it works just fine as a stereo and will give you a 4 channel effect with 4 speakers.

Back when Quad was popular, I jumped on the Quad band wagon with a Marantz 2440 Quad adapter (built in 2 channel amp for rear channels) with the optional SQA-2 full logic adapter module.
As I remember, some regular stereo records and tapes would decode into 4 semi-discrete channels, but most would just play the same information in all four channels.

Later I changed out the Marantz 2440 adapter/amp for a Sony SQD-2020 Quadraphonic discrete adapter driving a Marantz 8B amp for the rear channels.

You will find that the 2226B is a much more straightforward machine to own and operate than the 4230. Both are low-power units. Each, in its class, was pretty-much Marantz's entry-level machine.

They are extremely popular with collectors because they're pretty -- those silver faces and all those cool lamps. Their circuits are well-designed but not exceptional. Over time, the 2226B will cost you a lot less to own, and it will fail a lot less often.

At the time of their manufacture, they were in brutal competition with Sansui, Pioneer, Kenwood, Harman Kardon, and Yamaha. In general, the HK tuner section will stomp on the Marantz tuner section. The Marantz has a more durable power supply design than the Pioneer. Etc., etc.

Keep the four channel receiver and find some four channel records.
