In some of my early 1960's hi-fi books, I find pictures of gear made by this company. Norman Crowhurst, in his Stereo High Fidelity Handbook (Crowell, 1960), gave their address as 2506 West Washington Blvd, LA CA, and the book pictures several pieces of their gear. The G50D and BP40K basic amplifiers look particularly impressive.

They seem to have offered amplifiers, tuners, phono components, speakers and enclosures, accessories, and complete packaged systems. Allied, however, never carried their line, and I don't remember it in Lafayette or B-A. The stuff looks impressive in photos, but was it as good as it looked? Does this company still exist? If not, what happened to it? I've been wondering for a long time.

A few members at audiokarma.org have Bigg of CA amplifiers. I assume distribution was primarily West coast - have never seen one myself. I have at least one Sams folder for Bigg - I'll scan it and put it on my web page.

So, who was George Gott, the person those electronics bore the name of? A fictitious person, or perhaps their chief engineer or even the CEO?

Their units were not widely distributed and seldom seen even back in the day, probably most popular in California. Rumors had it that they built "copies" of designs sold by more famous audio brands, you would have to do side by side comparison to learn whether that is true or not. Even at this late date if you Google "George Gott" it comes up with a reference that one model was a copy of a Marantz.........so it probably has some merit.

I can’t help you with the history of the BIGG Co., but here are before pictures of one of my pair of BOC BP-40K amps. This amp had a pair of the “flattest” EL-34’s I have ever tested. Could be those Bumble-Bee caps had something to do with that? The amp must have been “Out of Sight-Out of Mind” and just run till it wouldn’t run anymore. It’s amazing that the transformers survived. Both of my amps have the Stancor A-8072 output transformer, the same one used in the Stancor “807” Ultralinear amps. Schematic and parts list are in Sams 517 (servicer).

I have since re-built the amps and they are currently driving a pair of Altec 848 speakers. I like them.

They are brave to put EL34s on a circuit board.

You can see discoloration where it overheated around the base of the tube sockets. Not recommended!

Many thanks for the pics, Mag. That answered quite a number of questions for me, and I can't add anything to what David, Codefox and Brett have posted. They summed things up well enough. I can guess the rest of the story.
