I just picked up these KLH Model six speakers today and I am sure that they would need new caps on the cross overs and I can't figure out how to take them apart,
I read that you can and you can't but no real directions
The (12") Speaker works well on both but very little out of the smaller speaker even with treble all the way up on the amp and music which should make the smalls speakers perk up.
Anyway, Here's a pic,
Peter

Peter,
The original KLH 6 speakers had their woofer and tweeter epoxied to the cabinet from the inside. If you have that model, there is no way you can open them without cutting them open. KLH redesigned them in later models so you can unscrew them from the front.

Were you able to take the front grills off?

On the later ones, you can take out the woofer and work through that hole. The early ones weren't designed to be taken apart... the drivers are epoxied to the cabinet. I have read that you can remove the panel on the back and chip out the epoxy to reach the crossover components... My sixes are the later version which have drivers screwed in from the front, grille with Velcro, recessed panel on he back.

Cant seem to remove the grille cloth,, Too bad because I really feel like they will sound really nice if recapped, Right now they have good sound, But I think that will turn to great with new caps,
two digit Zip code means pre 1956.
I can't get enough light through the grille cloth to determine if screwed of glued, I also don't want to hurt the value by tearing out grille cloth or cutting hole in back,
If I can't get in them without damaging them, I will toss them on the Bay.

FWIW - some AR speakers of that era used staples, painted in the grille cloth color, to attache the grille to the cabinet. A magnifier is useful for finding the staples. Another useful method is to slide a thin pry - a hacksaw blade or feeler gauge - under the edge of the grille and lift gently, to discover where the attachment points are.

IF you get to that point I'd be interested in taking them off your hands

I could bi-amp them and not worry about the crossover

The KLH model 6 speakers are awesome sounding, I have a pair in my son's room, unbelievable sound. I also have a pair of early raw plywood KLH 6's when compared to a pair of recapped KLH 6 had slightly less treble. I gave away pair of 6's last week at the NJARC swap meet to a member who have me a Dynaco Mark II mono block a few months ago. He was thrilled.

SO when do you want me to drive to your house and you can show me how to get them apart???
If I wire from G to each terminal without jumper in place, The big speaker sounds great and get nearly nothing from the tweeter..
Needs something to get it right,
Like I said, I would prefer to fix them is I can take them apart.
If not, Off they go.

You probably have the epoxy speakers if the grills don't come off. No easy way to set inside them unless you cut out the rear by the speaker terminals and glue some wood so you can remount the speaker terminals. In my KLH speakers the capacitors were on the speaker terminal plate.

No, KLH realized that it was a mistake to epoxy the drivers in, they did that for to make a to make a solid sounding speaker but created havoc when KLH had to repair the speakers during the warranty period.

KLH's official technique for replacing internal components on these speakers was to cut out the woofer cone with a razor blade and work through that hole. When done, recone the woofers. Unbelievable.

EPOXYING the woofers in? They must have taken too much LDS (sic, Star Trek IV) in the 50s. Glad I waited until they came down. The 6s were as tight and clean as you could get for their size and price.

If'n you get the grill cloth out, stick them in a walk-in freezer. You plan to change the caps anyway, right? Then apply coercion to the drivers. And use a thin bead of RTV to get them back in. It is somewhat less "permanent."

Do you think I can cut through the wood around the rear terminals without cutting wire too?
Thinking Jig Saw.

I'd be leery of it, Pete. You wouldn't be able to know what's happening inside until it was too late.

They were epoxied from the inside.

Postdated memo to KLH: There's such thing as non-hardening caulk and wood screws.
