cam deterioration is the breakdown of the zinc material they are made of. it starts with cracks and progresses until large chunks begin to fall off. it is best to know it is happening and possibly shore up the damage with some epoxy before they get to the point of no return. I had a deck a few years ago that was working ok, I opened it up to replace the motor capacitors because it was slowing down to a crawl at the end of a full rewind. what I found was a set of cams that were split and falling apart. I could not tell from outside the machine as they were still working like they were supposed to.

i have read that impurities in the zinc casting is what causes the delamination, impurities introduced in the casting process. it does not happen to all akai zinc cams but most. that said, I have a couple of decks with the same cams and they are still crack free. may have been a friday last shift problem or just QA issues during production.

Does anyone know of a source for NOS or reliable replacement springs for an Akai X-1800SD? I have one that in for repair for 7 months now because the service tech is looking for transport and/or pinch roller associated springs... Are they really that hard to find? I also may need to replace the internal speakers. Any assistance on parts would be greatly appreciated! It powers up, the little roller spins, all the lights work... It goes into play. I just wanted it "cleaned and serviced" and the 8-track checked out and speakers replaced as I think the surrounds are shot and here I sit 7 months later...

Kind regards to all!

Welcome to the forum.

Suggest you go get your machine from the shop and salvage what functions it
can provide. You might also search e-bay for a 'parts' X-1800 SD.

Do the original speakers work at all?

I think that model might use the speakers with the cloth surrounds that get hard with age.
