The filter caps under the chassis are rated 500 volts. My replacements are rated 450. Can I get away with placing in line a
surge preventing resistor to accomodate the lower rating?

thank-you

I don't think so.
Adding a resistor will reduce surge impact on initial charge... but unless it's a really large value (voltage-dropping) resistor it will not in anyway limit the exposure the caps see at maximum voltage.

I'd use the 500volt rated caps.. esp since line voltages today are 10 - 15 volts more than they used to be.. driving up the voltage on the 2ndary of your power transformer feeding the rectifier.

thanks, Peter. I'll put the 450v rated filter caps aside. Any idea where I can find ones rated at 500?
