Washington, DC of course, where I grew up. I stumbled upon this clip on Youtube -- definitely takes me back! My dad listened to them every single day, and although my generation was more the WPGC type, you can't overlook the fact that this station was BIG (still is) and their morning show was classy. About the only thing missing from this clip was "Senator, play us a march!" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RIWaqwcF ... re=related

Definitely! My dad listened to nothing but... some of those radio ad jingles are burned into my gray matter... "Citizens Bank of Maryland, conveniently yours"... "You always get your way, at Ourisman Chevrolet"...
I was a WPGC kid myself, until they became (or I figured out) they were insipid pop. Then I matured into FM album rock (105.1 and 101.1) and eventually progressive music (WHFS, back when Weasel and Bob Here ruled.)

In high school in the early 80's, I definitely had them on first thing after waking up to hear if my county had closed schools for a snow day! WMAL is remembered fondly by me, especially because I credit Ed Walker (Play It Again Ed) for getting me interested in old records, swing, pop of the 30's-50's...

Does anyone have info on an OTR show with a host? Not just a stream or download, but someone who introduces programming like Greg Bell. To me, having someone introduce old time radio shows makes it feel more alive and interesting.

I believe Ed Walker does just that. I understand he is now on WAMU, hosting old time radio programs. I remember Ed Walker and Willard Scott, "The Joy Boys", on WWDC. "We are the Joy Boys of radio, We chase electrons to and fro . . ." I believe Ed is blind.

Ed is blind. Went with him and a few others fron DC to Hanover, PA on a record buying trip in early 1978. No, Ed did not drive.
I used to work on WMAL-FM in the 70's, opposite Harden and Weaver. We would BS in the early morning time before our respective shows began at 6AM. Two nice and talented guys. WMAL was a great station!

WMAL was a great station! Still is. The FM side -- I remember it was album rock for a period, then it became Q-107. Nowadays the FM is the same talk radio as AM, and a different frequency -- 105.9 I believe. Isn't that the old WXRA Country?

I was there when they switched the call sign from WMAL-FM to WRQX (late 1977). They bought those letters from a commercial fishing vessel. The closest to "rocks" they could come up with. Think you're correct aboyt X-Ray.
