I just got my first Hickok and it's missing the 83 tube. They are pretty expensive on eBay it seems, and right now i'm looking to use the tube as it was intended for the original circuit, and not solid state. Does anyone have a known to be good 83? Thanks!

Why don't you try the solid state replacement for the 83? I made a few of them and tested one against a real 83 in a B&K 700 tube tester and the results were the same; I haven't done extensive testing so I can't swear they will work in all applications.
All you need is two 5.6 volt 5 watt zeners, two 10 ohm 5 watt resistors and two 1N5804 rectifiers.

How about an NOS one from these guys? I have purchased from them several times, no problems and as described. I did get an 83 from them a few years ago.

An 83 tube $24.00. The one that I got from them was an RCA.

NO association with them BTW.

I've had to edit out discussion-type posts in this ad twice today, any more discussion should be done using the PM system.
