1: Sell it to someone who wants an engraved Zenith tube.. 2: Be proactive and find a spare power transformer before the tube shorts.... 3: 4: I'll some blanks for other guys to fill in

Ebay. Or tube collection. Possibly some smart person took it out before it wrecked a transformer.

6X5G is similar to an 84. They were used in many radios which didn't have problems. Be sure the tube doesn't have shorts, then it could be used within it's limits.
Zenith did use 2 - 6X5's in some radios. That design had a much higher failure rate for the rectifier.

My 667 says no shorts. This tube came out of a Zenith 5808 chassis (8S463). I haven't gotten around to checking the transformer, since, for now anyway, I'm only interested in the cabinet. All of the tubes are Zenith, and most are usable. The 6F6G shows a 1 Meg H-K short, but it was tested in a functioning 5808, and it worked fine. I hastily tested it's merit too, and it's 120! The 6U5 was missing on arrival!

Only one 6X5G in 8S463 radio. If it tests good, without shorts, tube is usable. Someone would want an original Zenith 6X5G with engraved base.

here is My 0.02 cents on the topic of 6x5 tubes in zenith radios. Just make a 84 to 6x5 adapter or use a 84m tube

Yes...I know...this was a short test, and it's only one data point, but the tube functions as designed. On a side note, the power transformer, on this 5808, runs cooler than any other radio that I have.

In the past I have gotten Zeniths in for service with either rewired sockets or replacement sockets (also a replacement transformer of course) and I restore it to 6X5G configuration with a proper transformer. I then plug in solid state replacements for 6X5's I make which should last indefinitely. The thing to be concerned about is what can happen down the road. A new owner will get a schematic and note that the radio should have a 6X5G in it and will try to plug one in. I prepare a folder with all services done on a radio to go with the radio but I don't count on someone passing it along with the radio when they sell it later on. I try to keep a radio in it's original configuration so future owners won't be scratching their head(s) trying to work out what was done to it in the past. I also fix a permanent label to restuffed filters stating the contents and the date the restuffing was done. I only keep 6X5's for my other equipment that can use them such as my EICO 315. I sell any excess.

I simply use 6X5WA's in my Zeniths and dont worry about it since Im not selling them. If I were to sell, then including an engraved 6X5G (one or two) with a proper caveat, might interest the buyer if the other tubes also matched the originals.

The last two letters It stands for ruggedized, usually shock resistance and/or improved insulation

Far too much spoken about this one, but I would recommend a moderate fuse, and never leave the room or dare fall alsleep whilst playing the set. Of course you could get a couple of diodes for a dime.

You may get more being a Zenith with engraved base.

Every shorted 6x5 showed no shorts before it shorted.
A short circuit is instantaneous. Once it occurs, it cannot be reversed.

Thank you, Scott. I'm warped, but not time warped.
