Can anyone give me any information as to why ELL80/6HU8 tubes are so hard to find and why virtually no tube tester even lists them? I recently found a Fisher amplifier which uses 2 of them. This amplifier is evidently the last one made by Fisher with tubes before they went to solid state in around 1965. Thanks.

The last tubes introduced had the least time to build up inventory before they were discontinued... try looking up a 6DY7 (good luck!), 6JK6, ECLL800, ECC808...

Grundig actually came out with an adapter to use two EL95s in place of an ELL80.

I looked at some of my tube tester data and found the tube listed in charts for the following testers I have on hand.

B&K 606
EICO 666
Mercury 1100
Hickok 800A

I didn't bother digging out my Hickok I-177 Charts for which I have the updated data so it is probably there also. It doesn't seem to be a particularly hard tube to test.

If the circuit isn't ultra-linear, use a 6360. You will have to rewire the socket though.

They are a little scarce, not a popular tube. I repaired a Fisher console that used them to drive a transistor output stage using 8 germanium power transistors,I think it was a model F-59. I'll have to check and see if I have any.

The ELL80 and the ECL800 were quite well known in the European tape recorder and
receiver service business in the 60's, again in the last models before transistors took over.
They wanted to reduce the socket count, especially when multiplex came out.

:( New to this site but does anyone know how to test a 1L6 tube? My Eico 628 does not have it on the chart. Thanks!

eraljust,

The 628 is supposed to be an upgraded 625. Use the link to download a 625 chart and see if it conforms to your tester.
