Interesting----I had earlier found that some could be identified with an ordinary incandescent flashlight. I wonder if the monochromatic nature of the LED light is relevant? Or maybe it is more polarized? All my unknown tubes are packed, so I can't try this....

Many LEDs have a very narrow angle of irradiance. This might simply work to light from within the glass while minimizing glare off of the surface. Or so I postulate.

I bought a very small 15X magnifier with 2 LED's, less than $4.00 shipping included from Hong Kong.
It has been just amazing to ID tubes and to take a closer look at parts.
Just look for "15 x LED Light Hand Held" on eBay.

It just blows my mind to think they can sell something like that at such a price and still make money

This gives me an idea. A while back I bought a set of toy night vision goggles at Goodwill for 2 bucks. They work like a dream, and I can clearly see far away outdoors in pitch black, as well as navigate my way around the cluttered basement with all the lights off. And the batteries last a LONG time.
Anyways, they are infrared. I'll try it soon, and let you all know.

I'm currently at 66% with this procedure. Had three ST-bottle tubes that were unknown, and found lettering on two of them.
Now, to find what the heck this one mystery Cunningham tube (top cap, think it's a pentode?) is...
Regards, Gordon.
