.
Henry, my strange, and youngest Brother In Law has a new hobby, snagging Catfish for fun and food.
Last Sunday he fed the immediate family (my wife is the oldest of nine) with just the smaller of these
three. The largest weighed a bit over seventy five pounds.
B.I.L. Henry’s larger Catch-O-The-Day, up close and personal on the tailgate of a handy pickup truck:
The other two of these three fish were taken to a local old folks home where they became Sunday Dinner.
Henry has been into this snagging/fishing thing for several months now, and the largest Catfish he has
taken so far was just over a hundred pounds.
Anyone else here into this type of fishing?

"Snagging"
Is that where you stick your arm up a hole under water and let that thing grab it and then yank it out of the hole ?
The h--- with that stuff. There could be anything in that hole.
It might not want to give your arm back !
They have a summer festival in a small town in Illinois (Wilmington) called "Catfish Days". Mostly it's a drunk-fest. They have Catfish,... but I don't think they are that big.

I think that's called "noodleing". Oklahoma is big into that.

I like to eat cajun style catfish but there arent any to catch up this way. Deep sea fishing gets my attention several times a year and I'll be heading out for blues next month. Those are a mean fish with a lot of fight.

I watched this on TV this last night....Check out the last 1/3
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQ8usmWQRro
There used to be a family of commercial fishermen on Lake Cumberland in SE Ky that caught these large catfish in nets and had a fresh fish store. These weren't fish fillets, more like chunks! The largest one I ever saw was ~5' long.

Some of those critters look big enough to bring a person home for dinner!

Wow! And I thought the 6 1/2 lb bass I caught a few weeks ago was big!
I'll pass on the noodling part. I once worked with a southern gent who did that often. He said the fish weren't bad, but the snapping turtles were another story.

Nope - - - it's fishing without bait.

That would feed my family for a week, mainly cause I don't like fish myself, though the wife and kids do. Trying tio catch one of those monsters would probably put my back out for good!!

The thing that amazes me is the fact that some of these lunkers were landed with fishing line rated at like 15 to 30 pounds test.
I wonder how they taste as compared to normal sized catfish?

Curt, I had a friend catch a 25 lb catfish and cut it up into steaks. They were very good. Now I know there is a huge difference between 75 lbs and 25 lbs, so there may be some difference in taste there.

My Brother In Law only uses the meat from the belly of the fish when they are this large - - - pretty good stuff,
tastes like you'd expect catfish to taste. I imagine the larger the Catfish, the less attractive the flavor - - at
least as a general thing. B.I.L. says the belly meat just tastes better than the rest of the fish on these larger ones.

Quote: How many years would it take to grow that size? Not a complete answer, but here is some pretty good information on various species of Catfish: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index ... 859AAiNtY4Also from: http://www.planetcatfish.com/shanesworl ... cle_id=286Quote: I started my search here at home. North America is home to two giant catfishes. Ictalurus furcatus, the blue catfish, is native to the Misssissippi, Ohio, and Missouri river basins. Angler Tim Pruitt, of Alton, Illinois, holds the record catch of this species weighin in at 124-pounds. He dragged out of the Mississippi River near Alton after a half-hour battle, the fish measured 58 inches long and 44 inches around. There is a record from the Missouri River of a 315 pound blue catfish that was caught "just after the Civil War."
The second giant is Pylodictis olivaris, the flathead catfish. The current world record, as of 1998, is a 123 pound monster caught in Kansas. Commercial catfishing operations report flatheads nearly 5 feet long and weighing in at 140 pounds. This was my first surprise. Many sources report that the blue catfish is the largest catfish in North America. However, according to the most recent world records, the flathead catfish currently holds the title. Maybe there are still a few giant old blue cats lurking deep in the Mississippi.
