I'm not sure how old it is, I would guess early 1900's, it has a nice patina and color to the recessed parts plus it has some small age cracks.
I got it at a rural auction for $20 or so, I was pretty lucky that day.

It's a piece of bone, but I don't know from what animal or what part.

William;
I would love to date your cane, but she's too old for me. Does she have a younger branch ? Or should I just leaf it alone ? With all the knowledgeable people here we for sure will get to the root of the question. If not maybe should branch out into other forums. You may be Barking up the wrong forum here. Or going against the grain. I hope KNOT.
It's obvious I have too much time on my hands.

Could it be whale bone ? The time period would fit and the whalers had a lot of free time on a 1 or 2 year whaling trip :wink: Hence my curiosity.

Maybe it's part of an antler?

I have to admit, it doesn't look like bone, close up.

Yep, an antler. He did a good job and I can also see it was well used.

Many WW2 vets brought them back from the UK as souvenirs or as functional. My uncle, who bailed out of a B-17, had one as he injured his ankle and it was never great after.

The one Alan posted was 1800's. I do make sticks with antlers and his looks like an Elk antler....not sure and not an expert on antlers, other than the ones I use. Sure hope it isn't from Rudolph :shock: Wonder if Santa uses a walking cane with an antler topper ?? :wink: :wink:

I saw the topic title and thought, "I can appreciate slender women, but SignatureSeriesOwner's female friend/relative/acquaintance might not like being called a 'walking stick' ". Plus, I am about 3000 miles away.
