My company was acquired by another company about 7 months ago. As part of the acquisition, our new parent corporation is doing a "technology refresh" in our office. They've put in new network switches, new ethernet drops, and today, the whole office is being outfitted with new printers. And guess what? One of those nice floor-standing printers is just about the same size as a console radio. I asked the guys what they do with the boxes, and they said "Throw 'em back on the truck, and recycle them." They're nice heavy boxes, double-wall corrugated cardboard.
If I ever need to ship a console radio, I know where I'm going for a box. I'm gonna track down one of these outfits that installs office printers, and ask them for some cast-off boxes! And the printers are all padded with big honking pieces of that dense foam, too (not styrofoam), that could be used for packing material.

I don't know about that. Consoles can be very very heavy. I think alot of times they get shipped freight in wooden crates, depending on size and weight. But some are mostly space inside, without a very large heavy framework or chassis, and might possibly be accomodated in one of those. Better get alot of insurance in either case.

Moving companies have boxes that can be used, one size is called a dish pack, I think it's about 4 or 5 cubic feet, and double walled. They are brought back to the warehouse, after use, and may be available, for low cost, or free.

They can sometimes weigh in at over 200lb. You've got the power supply, the motors and geartrains and all of the supporting framework, which is usually metal.

The absolute best source for heavy gauge large cardboard boxes are the appliance stores. The big name stores may recycle their boxes but the smaller independents most likely throw them out. Washing machine and refrigerator boxes are the best. Sometimes they'll come with their own wooden pallet attached to the bottom of the box. If one such box is to big for your needs, you can always cut it down to size.

And said copiers are usually strapped to a pallet and lifted by forklift from the back of a truck. therefore box is just a "cover"
