I have built 2 sites from scratch (ie) notepad, html, css and java. It takes patience and a desire to always fix the little things; sort of like doing over radios.
If you are interested in doing it to learn, than have at it. If you just want a site, get someone else to do it for you.

I did my site, www.indianaradios.com, using Windows Publisher 97 and is probably one of the few websites left, on the internet, that still uses Publisher 97. It's an old click and drag program in which I have to use a little HTML to tweak it and get around it's few flaws but it's still a nice program to use.

Here's one I built from scratch using simple html: http://home.comcast.net/~btse1/grandy/grandymainpage.htm. I used to own one of the boats pictured (the cruiser with the blue canvas top) but have found that old radios are a tad cheaper ... I still maintain the site (and need to update it to 2012 real soon), as the season is about to get into full swing. Tom

Same here. Never took any classes, just self-taught. HTML, CSS, Javascript - enough to get a site with freatures I needed. Also built and admin the AWA website.
It does take patience and nit-picking when you hand code a page. I use templates to get a shell then hand modify as needed.

I have built a few websites using Microsoft FrontPage. Lately, I am looking at using either WordPress or Weebly, both nice in their own ways.

Built my own - http://www.watthourmeters.com - used a program called HTML Validator. It's a nice proofreader to help make sure one is writing clean HTML...

I have been thinking about getting my own website to sell junk on and add a link to it in my Ebay listings so that I can try to sell some stuff without paying Ebay fees.
How much would it cost to have one built for me? Where should I go to find someone that does a nice job and can incorporate a Paypal Shopping Cart like you see when you buy from Oldradioparts or Justradios?
Good luck with your website Rich!
Kris

I like AOLpress, abandonware, my copy was released in '96 for Mac os9/Classic and Windows. I tried several others and keep coming back to it. Though it's old and klunky it does what I need. I also still use Photoshop 2.5, if that tells you anything. Taught myself HTML and got Sandy up to speed with AOLpress and Fetch for FTP. Since I am a lousy teacher, that has to mean it's easy to learn. Now if we could just learn how to figure out our phone, we'd be all set! -Ed

I have built several websites over the years. My favorite HTML editor is Coffeecup. I then run the code through HTML Validator to make sure I didn't mess up a tag or two along the way. I stay away from Microsoft's products. Microsoft likes to sneak in non-conforming tags that only work in IE, in order to make their web browser appear to be better than the others when, in fact, it is the least compatible with the world HTML code standards (WC3).

Find a good web host (I use Downtownhost) and buy a domain name. You can go cheap, but be careful. Mine are 15 a year. The hosting packages are under $100 per year. Once you have a domain name and a web host, then there is a User Control Panel that has all kinds of free goodies and scripts. They have web site templates you can use to create your site.
There are free hosts out there but they don't convey a very professional site, which is important if you are in business.

Quote: My favorite HTML editor is Coffeecup. Yes, they have a nice editor and they provide free updates. I've had them since 2000 ?? However a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editor is easier for the beginner. Ditto, stay away from MS and Front Page.

I built this one mainly using Netscape Composer (really old, but standard output). Then I learned CSS which I hate because I forget it as soon as I learn it. CSS afficiandos scoff at using tables because they are "old fashioned." But they are a hundred times easier for me. http://www.beecavewoods.com/The only thing this site can boast is that it's 100% javascript free. The menu is CSS.

Hi Rich, I was directed to do a website for us back in 2000. I bought an FTP program. Stared at it, and threw it into the " to do" box. It's still there. Struck me that constant updating would be like caring for an infant. Nothing worse than an unmaintained website. I opted out of the whole thing.
It may be a great thing for you. Just wanted to give you perspective from the other side of the fence.
