I like metal film one percent. Tolerance doesn't matter so much but metal film does not catch on fire. And I like sunspec for resistors. I bought an assortment of 1/2 1, 2, 3 and 5 watt for less than $150. I still need to but the occasional 25W Dale from mouser, but I rarely have to stop and order resistors.
Caps I get electrolytics from Mouser and Sal. Polyesters from mouser, Sal, Mark Oppat and just radios. Safety caps from Mouser and just radios and some cool combo electrolytics from Bob's capacitors.
Mark Oppat is the guy for almost everything else. Tubes, pots, you name it. If he doesn't have it, he can usually find it. Great guy. There are a couple of tube guys on the classified forum, genoo and alton that I had always got good testing well priced tubes from also.
Phono parts from Gary Stork at voiceofmusic.com. He is also a great guy and can figure out what you need when you don't even know.
There is a thread here that has links to all the great resources in the hobbyist community, though they will leave out Mouser and Digikey because they are monster companies not geared to the hobbyist. Maybe someone has a link.

I hadn't heard of Sal. I would like to check out his E-caps. Does he have a web site?
Thanks,
Bill

They have a minimum $20 order, so snagging all 10 colors doesn't even get you up to the minimum. But throw in an $8 resistor kit, and now we're in business. Thanks for the recommendation! Rodney

Most early radios used resistors with 20% tolerance spreads.
So, if you end up with a drawer of 9100 ohm, or similar, resistors, they may be gathering dust for a long time.

Rodney In fact I bought my hookup wire from them too in a kit - one each, stranded and solid: http://www.elexp.com/cbl_ld25.htmNot quite as good a deal, but worked well for me.
