Just watched the Avengers ( on film) and give it 2 thumbs up. well written , acted and edited. $120 million over the weekend is my guess.

I thought it was really well done. I liked the Iron Man movies okay, but thought Thor and Captain America were sort of empty fluff that didn't really have much weight and were very clearly designed to gear people up for The Avengers... and thus don't really stand on their own. Also, while I like Joss Whedon's TV shows, his feature films have been somewhat lacking (DISCLAIMER: I have not seen Cabin in the Woods yet). So I went into it expecting something mediocre, and was quite pleasantly surprised.

I'd say The Avengers is about on par with JJ Abrams' "Star Trek." If you don't have any interest in superheroes, it probably won't have much appeal for you... but within its genre, it is very well done. Good writing, tight pacing, visually impressive, and just the right amount of depth to give it gravity without weighing it down. (I suppose "give it gravity without weighing it down" is an especially dysfunctional example of a mixed metaphor, but you know what I mean).

In other words: not as good as The Dark Knight (which is still the only superhero film that I'd call a legitimately great film, without any qualifiers), but The Avengers is still one of the best superhero films.

Can't say too much else without spoilers, but who else has seen it?

I will have to say THe Dark Knight was one of the most painful films I have tried to watch. IT never would end. I think it only made the big bucks becuase Heath Ledger died rigth before it opened.

They filmed some of that movie where I work, but I am not in any hurry to go out and see it, myself. I must be getting old. I don't have to ponder on "geez, how did they do that?" any more, in a movie, I figure it all is inside of a computer and they can do anything now. Synthetic virtual entertainment. I am not into computer gaming, either. Maybe that is the difference.

It made $260 million outside of the US, films make about 80% of their profit in the US so it's definitely a success money wise.

I saw cabin in the woods. I would give it a 1.8 out of 5 and I loved Ironman if you need a reference. Looking forward to Avengers. Cabin in the Woods was a parody that was not funny and not enough of a parody. On second thought, 1.4 out of 5. Wait for DVD/netflix and then don't rent it.

I took my three teen nephews to the sneak preview on Thursday. They loved the movie and having carte blanche at the concessions counter. $60 - ouch! I'd give it three out of four stars for adults. I expected more character depth from Joss Whedon based on his Firefly and Dollhouse shows, but I understand this was geared for a different audience. I hate the 3D. It darkens the screen and still seems gimmicky.

The boys were thrilled to wear the promo Avengers T-shirts that an ARF member so kindly sent gratis. Thanks Chris for adding to the uncle cred.

I wish they would stop with the 3-d. Those glasses degrade the picture too much. Another scam to soak us for cash. As for the movie...It was great. Very well done.

Definitely agreed about 3D... we saw the first showing of the day on Saturday, which (in addition to having the much cheaper matinee pricing) was the only way to see it at our local theater without having to do 3D. 3D is not worth the extra cost, and it doesn't really add anything to the films--just makes them feel like gimmicky theme-park attractions.

Really, the only medium which actually seems to benefit artistically from 3D displays is video games, in which the addition of depth perception can significantly help with the gameplay experience. We don't pay for 3D movies, and I don't think we'll ever get a 3D TV... we'll wait for proper holograms

They already did that. It had Sean Connery and was somewhat of a disappointment.

I'll wait till it comes out in the Red Box machine for a $1.00. 3, 4, or 5D they can keep it.

I loved the movie. 5 out of 5. Wonderful, spectacular, whimsical and funny. I am going to go against the crowd and say see it in 3D IMAX. It will be great either way, but it was worth 11$ vs 5$ for a matinee.

Best moment in the film, "I am a GOD" from Loki, not a spoiler, it will happen to fast for that. Scarlet Johansen gets better with every year and she was no slouch to start with. There are definitely going to be a lot of sequels. This will be the biggest grossing film of all time.
