For a presentation I'm looking for a few vacuum tube era TV repairman cartoons... A quick Google search did not turn up any real rib ticklers (as I seem to recall).

I seem to have the vague recollection of even seeing a comic book collection on the subject many, many moons ago. But it was something I was not going to clutter the bookshelf with at the time.

Got any good ones to share?

Robert

Here's a dedicated radio man on the job.

Rodrigues was one of the best with his too-true observations "Over & Out" drawn for Electronics Illustrated.

poorguy...

Looks like you found a gold mine... so far I've found 3 TV specific ones to make me chuckle.. Thanks!

My failing memory says there should be more TV specific though.

+1 on the Rodrigues cartoons; you could fill a book with them! He did a lot of TV ones. Then, there was an artist who signed his stuff "Sinclair"; he did a few as well.

Greetings to the Forum:

Cartoon 11 on this site: https://www.cartoonstock.com/directory/ ... airman.asp brings a memory to mind which is worth a chuckle.

Back in the 1960's when I worked for a TV shop, I changed out a defective yoke in a B&W portable... Zenith as I recall. A couple of days later, the owner brought the set back, stating that the picture looked good but he couldn't read any printing that showed up on the screen.

Turned out I had interchanged the horizontal winding leads which results in a mirror-image picture.

Oh, Well.... :D

Regards,

Favorite?

The one where a guy brings his TV in and complains that all he gets when his TV comes on is snow, but after it warms up, it turns to rain....

I have a yellowed copy here somewhere.

Not a repairman cartoon, so apologies for the thread semi-hijack, but this has always been one of my favorites.

My favorite is from the "Channel Chuckles" comic strip, written by Bil Keane who is/was much better known for "The Family Circus". It shows a TV repairman in a customer's home, telling her "It's just one of the tubes". Behind his back, he is holding the picture tube. (-:

Greetings to the Forum:

For Scott: I can't find the cartoon I was looking for on the internet; it dates from the early 1960's. But it is another dollar amount cartoon, so I will try to describe it for you. By the way, this cartoon was posted at Channel Radio Supply Company, the wholesale electronic parts distributor for Santa Barbara, CA in the 1960's and 70's. Long gone now, of course.

The cartoon shows two kids standing in front of the counter in the parts house with a huge long list like a scroll that has spilled out on the floor. There are two countermen working to bring out items from stock and the counter is mostly filled with stacks of parts boxes. The kid not reading from the list is addressing the countermen thusly: "By the way, stop when you get to $5.67.... that's all we have."

Regards,

That brings memories back to me from when I was a young kid - maybe 4 or 5?

The family was watching the Flintstones on the TV. Everybody was laughing. Suddenly I was overcome with curiosity about how the Flintstones were in that box. I got up, went around behind the set, and peered into the back, to see all the metal parts, wires, and softly glowing tubes. I was more overcome with curiosity than ever.

I owe my entire technical career to that moment. :D

somebody gave me this when I was starting out as a small boy "adjusting" the controls inside the little skinny metal pull-out door on dad's mid 60's mostly tube color zenith tv. I've had this since I was about 5 years old in the mid 70's.

it has hung in the shop since I started out a few years later.

I used to LOVE it when the repair man came. he used to allow me to sit behind him and look at all the glowing tubes, wires, adjustments, and the like. he also would let me keep the tubes that he pulled and replaced from the set.

mom said that he had a hard time getting anything done with the little "question box" hovering over him.

it was like a visit from santa when he came.

I was that age or a year older. Dad had the TV in the wall with the open chassis in a closet. I'd drag a wooden chair in there, climb up and get a good close look at the glowing tubes. I was fascinated. Somehow I knew not to touch it but don't recall ever being tutored on that.

A little off topic, but:

I was probably about 4 when my parents got our first TV (sometime in 1951). My mother was saying that someone would be out soon to install an antenna. But the set was on and showing a picture. I wondered how that could be without an antenna. Years later they were replacing the carpet in the living room and the TV was shoved into another room while that was happening. Now I could get a clear view of the back and could see the built in antenna. I remember thinking "Oh that's how it got a picture before the antenna was installed".
