Define "alien".

From outside our planets' environment.

Lots of things don't make a ton of sense in that article, such as bacteria being able to survive in a vacuum and in temps from -150C to +150C. And it is The Sun. My guess is that the information being reported is incomplete at best.

Either that or the crazy brass studs have killed us all.

Isn't that one of those crappy type news agencies akin to what you'd see at the checkout line at the grocery store? As in " Batboy lives!"

Thus I am highly suspect...

No, The Sun is a real newspaper, for some value of "real" (which could be said about all of them, these days). It's a tabloid, which in the UK used to mean more lowbrow than a broadsheet, but it's nothing like the National Enquirer. More like the NY Post, if I had to grasp for a comp over here.

They should have washed it before they sent it up so that they wouldn't be so confused.

I totally disagree. Maybe earth borne bacteria may not survive in space, but when it comes down to knowing
what is beyond earth, we are clueless. If you remember in the 70's and before, there were no planets anywhere close
to us and likelihood of a class M planet was super small. Jump to today, NASA now announces that class M planets
are everywhere, and close to earth than ever thought before.
So what's out there? we don't know yet. As far as we can see, all we see if more galaxies, billions of them, that contain trillions of planets.
Our own sun has 8+ planets. So the amount of bacteria out there is just as mind numbing as the universe is big.
Aliens are real, how can they not be?

In an infinite universe, any possibility, no matter how remote, has occurred an infinite number of times. So most certainly there is other life out there. When I look up at the stars I don't wonder if there is life out there, I wonder where it is and what it is like.

As to the bacteria story, I think it is most likely of earthly origin. But you never know, so close examination is required.

Bacteria and virus's are stout little organisms
Here on earth, no matter how cold or how hot, there seems to be something that lives in that ebviroment.
Look at ocean vents, methane and heat at deep water levels with super high pressure, but yet,. there lives an organism
Life is amazing in all its forms, and we've seen only about .000001% of it

While The Sun may be printed on real newspaper it is not, in and of itself, a legitimate newspaper. It is a tabloid no different than those at the checkout counter at the grocery store. Anyone who doesn't believe that hasn't done their homework. The only real value in The Sun is using it to line the parakeet cage.

The London tabloids cover a broad spectrum from "somewhat reliable but sensationalized" to "useful for wrapping fish-n-chips". I believe The Sun is closer to the latter.

To be fair, it is possible that the ISS may have picked up evidence of bacteria from a non-terrestrial source. But such findings would need to be verified and analyzed, with alternative hypotheses proposed and subsequently tested. It's not a subject I would expect the mainstream media to necessarily report correctly, never mind a London tabloid. Also, based on the link below, the claim is coming from a single cosmonaut:

http://www.slate.com/articles/health_an ... _life.html

I'll conclude by stating that the #1 source of observed scientific "breakthroughs" is measurement error.

Greetings to the Forum:

The universe is not infinite in extent nor in age. It is roughly 14 billion years old and therefore has a radius of approximately 14 billion light years at most.

Given the age limitation, it is mathematically demonstrable that the information necessary to create a living cell cannot have risen by random processes... the probability is on the close order of zero.

Therefore, it is unlikely in the extreme that any life exists anywhere in the universe except right here on this planet.

A discussion of why this is so and the science behind it cannot be carried out on this forum. PM me if you would like further information.

Regards,

Well, there are the page three girls...

But I agree, not a trustworthy source of news.
