Will be picking this up tomorrow for a really good price. Looks like a 8-S-154

Any particular reason for believing that? I'm curious if you see something subtle.

I say it's an 8-S-154. The other model doesn't have the same bezel nor the tuning "eye," or whatever it's called. Good buy.

"Target Tuning" Zenith called it. its a tuning meter like Philco used, but Philco's was set up to do a segment.

That's really bad ethics when people do that, but it happens often. Always remember that you have the cash in your pocket and that "next set" will come-up again!
I always said the Zenith 8S154 was my favorite radio of all time. Classic streamlined-deco lines, bold big dial, and fairly compact and nicely proportioned cabinet. A very decent player too.

... and better ones. The sets made from 1940 to 1942 were IMO the best performing and sounding AM consoles that Zenith ever made. The preceding ones were attractive looking and arguably had better-made cabinetry, but the later sets made just before WW2 shut down consumer radio production are vastly superior in operation.

Yeah, I did not really need it, but I don't have a Zenith yet and was looking forward to that one.

I have a pretty nice Philco 37-675 occupying my time right now anyway.

although that really smells, look at it this way: it was not meant for you to have for some unknown reason.

I've had this happen a time or two, and the times that it happened, I found something waaaay better.

I have the '38/'39 version of it with the teardrop bezel.
Last summer a guy was selling a nice trailer I wanted on CL. I had looked at several before and this one was right, and I needed it badly as I was loading for the summer MARC show in Kzoo. I dashed off to get it (WAY on the other side of town) during late rush hour and wouldnt you know, my right front caliper freezes up and starts smoking, had to stop and let that cool. Then the freeway is way backed up due to some construction. So I call him and say "I am on my way, just running late but will be there by 8pm" as he had asked me to be. As I get there, another guy is hitching it up and pulling away. He never said anyone else was coming and said "first come gets it" when I got there. Dickhead ! If he had just said someone else was coming when I called, I would have turned around then but I was more than half way there when I called.

Sorry you didn't get the Zenith, life is like a sports game you win some and you lose some! I agree with the others here when one door closes another opens! Part of the fun of old radios is the hunt. I'm betting you will get a nice Zenith for your collection.

I’ve had similar situations like that happen to me too many times. Unfortunately it’s happening more often than it used to and happens more with younger people. A mans word isn’t worth what it used to be.

I think that is the part of the deal that really pissed me off. I called the lady not long after she listed it along with two other branded consoles. I must have talked to her about 15 minutes and she sounded really sincere about the deal.

When I had talked to her again just after I got off work, she told me that she had sold all three, I told her that she never stated first come first serve what she did was not cool. She then stated, "Don't be rude to me." and then hung up.

"Don't be rude to me." ....... what a *%^$$$%^#....

so true

i'm 47 and thankfully, i'm old enough to have grown up in and understand the era of "a man's word and a handshake is all that is needed to make a deal/committment."

unfortunately, things aren't like they used to be and this ideology is becoming a thing of the past.

many years ago, i knew a guy who was a regular acquaintance in my daily activities.

he had a GE console early 40's radio.

we discussed me buying it many times and i was "guaranteed" first dibs. we talked me buying it for a couple years on a regular basis, but he had to wait until he cleaned out his mother's house. i had his absolute "word" that when he cleaned out, i would get first offer. he knew that i really wanted it which i absolutely did.

well, i asked him about it one day and he said that he sold it.

for some reason, it hit me the wrong way. i wasn't nice and i'm not proud of that, but it was what it was.

i was a phone call away, a 15 minute drive away, and had the ability to pick it up any evening or weekend, so it was not like i would have been a problem for me to get it when he wanted it gone.

sad part is, this guy who put the screws to me was....

get ready for it....

ready ?....

60-some years old !

his "word" was not worth a darn.

moral of the story: it was not in the cards for me to have for some unknown reason to me. since then, i have found much better and much nicer.

it is one of those times that the statement "it wasn't meant to be" is the only way to look at it.

I have no idea what if any experience the lady had with selling stuff. If its from Craigslist I have had many "promises" of sincere sounding people coming over at a later time to buy and pick up an item that never show, never call. If she had an offer from another person who told her "I'll be there in 20 minutes" she jumped on a sure thing.Or the caller gave a much better offer so ethics went out the window.
