That's quite a haul! Good stuff too! A few weeks ago I finally found the 78rpm album version of "Voice of the Xtabay" for a good price on eBay, but they didn't package it well and all four disks arrived cracked! They gave me a refund with no hassle, but it was disappointing. Most people on eBay are asking way to much for it! On a happier note, I'll be getting a nice haul of 78's, 45's and LP's today for free and will post about them tonight!

My instant record collection finally arrived! My Sister's coworker had to move her Mother up from California and one of the things they didn't want to deal with was her records so they are now mine. I got about 80 78's all 40's and 50's popular stuff along with a small stack of children's sides. Some of the heaviest hitters are:

Bill Haley and His Comets - Rock Around the Clock
Fats Domino - Ain't it (that) a shame - cracked but playable
Louis Prima - Three disks
Glenn Miller - Chattanooga Choo Choo/I've Got a Gal in Kalamzoo
Benny Goodman - Don't Be That Way/Stompin' At the Savoy
Andrews Sisters
Ink Spots
Mills Brothers
Sinatra
Johnny Ray
Louis Armstrong
Peggy Lee
Artie Shaw

There were also about 60 45's, but quite a few of them are children's disks. Here are some of the better ones:

Beatles - Let It Be
John & Yoko - Instant Karma
Janis Joplin W/ BB&THC - Piece of My Heart
Janis Joplin - Cry Baby
Elton John - Crocodile Rock
Stevie Wonder - Living For The City
Eagles - Take it Easy
Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes - If You Don't Know Me By Now
Tommy Roe
Dick & Dee Dee
Wayne Newton
Classics IV

For LP's There are about 20 mostly classical, but there are a few interesting items:

4 Seasons - Greatest Hits
Rick Nelson - Greatest Hits
Donovan - Greatest Hits
Chicago - Greatest Hits
Johnny Cash - Live at San Quentin
Bill Cosby
Smothers Brothers
Glenn Miller - 10" LP
Nat King Cole - 10" LP

And part of the fun going through a good sized lot of 78's is finding an oddball now and then. Saw duet / Saw Solo actually came in a kit one could buy if you had an interest in learning to play musical saws. 5" diameter record and looks black but in the light it turns bluish green. Couldn't find out what it is made of. Rather flexible though.

Saw Duet? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA - I'm crying over here. They used to put anything on a record in those
days LOL. I thought Al Jolson's whistling was bad. No offense, Chris, that just really hit my funny bone,
that's all.

I found this 1957 Sarah Vaughn LP at an antiques mall last weekend. All I can say is, wow! I have several of her early albums but this one is the best by far. What a voice!

and for the whipped cream on top I also found this 1960 Julie London LP. Both records are near mint and sound great.

Are there any female singers today in 2014 that even compare with Sarah Vaughn, Ella Fitzgerald, Julie London
Peggy Lee, Patti Page, June Christy, Chris Connor, Mary Ford, Jo Stafford, etc...?
You can't go wrong with any of these great ladies of song, and these were just a few.

Just in time for Christmas I picked up some appropriate 78 albums. Found them all locally and didn't have to pay more than a dollar a record for them. Some are typical choral and organ versions of carols, one is a Decca collection featuring Bing Crosby and Kenny Baker and one is The Nutcracker Suite in dance tempo by Freddy Martin and his Orchestra. That's a fun one! A four disk album of The Nutcracker done in big band style. You can find all eight sides on YouTube, they are worth a listen!

Anybody hear of a store called "2nd & Charles"? It's a chain that deals in used books, vinyl, DVDs, games, comic books, and CDs. One just opened north of Allentown, PA so we checked it out today. I'm impressed. Decent used LPs in the $4-5 range and many new pressings in the $28 range. They take trades and will issue store credit or pay cash. The LPs were Buy 2 get 1 free so I got these 3 for $9.

My local Salvation Army thrift store had some 45 albums for only .75 each. The album of Theremin music is of particular interest to me. There were three different albums released back in the late 40's/early50's. I have the reissues on CD but this is the first one I've found on vinyl. The 78rpm versions go for too much on eBay so I was happy to find this one on 45! I already have the Paul Weston album on 78, but I thought it was still worth buying the 45 version and it'll be interesting to compare the two to see which sounds better. Now where did I put that SpinClean?

I just picked up a mint copy of Bing Crosby's "Musical Autobiography." This is a 5 LP set with a locking brass- clipped case. I even have the original key in the sleeve for the clasp... It's amazing what you can find when thrift stores throw vinyls away. I also found a Duke Ellingtion Live in Fargo, 1940, and a perfect copy of Jim Croce's "Photographs and Memories..." I love my vinyls!

Three more... from Church rummage sale:

Lehar "The Merry Widow", a two-record boxed set with libretto (EMI-Angel) Severely warped, unplayable. Tried to flatten one of them in the oven (on warm) between two large, flat tiles. Failed, surface melted! Scrapped! The 50 cent investment a complete loss! (Except for the German/English libretto.)

Lehar "The Merry Widow - highlights",(EMI-Angel), one disk, only a bit scratchy, playable. Worth the 50 cents paid!

Bizet "Carmen" (London ffrr), one disk, very few scratches, good sound! Well worth the 50 cents paid!
Just my $1.50 worth...
Cheers,
Roger

The Jackie Gleason Orchestra "The Torch With The Blue Flame." Working on being a Gleason completeist. But with that goal, I'm wondering if I should include other label comps like Pickwick? I have a couple of theirs.

Just got a Jackie Gleason import...from Taiwan! Doing some research on the label (First Record), it seems they were into producing mostly "illegal" copies of LPs and then selling them to military personnel living there. The vinyl is clear orange. I posted this on a Facebook group, and from what one of the members said, that label usually did rock and roll stuff. He posted a picture of Herb Alpert's "The Lonely Bull." So, mine must be a little more uncommon.
