Just got back from this itty bitty coffehouse in the Haight and saw this powerhouse of a girl by the name of Geena Doreen who is basically a cross between Mama Cass, Laura Nyro and Janis Joplin.

Singing mostly obscure folk songs and various Joan Baez-esque hundred year old message music songs for the first 3/4 of her set - the audience was getting a little restless so she started picking up the tempo a little bit.

We grooved along to the next half a dozen numbers and then she closed her set with Stoney End but used ALL the verses - including the one ``unpublished'' line from the first verse of the single version and a whole other `final' verse that was discarded.

I was born from love
and my poor mother worked the mines
I was raised on the good book Jesus
Till I read between the lines

(CHORUS)
Now I don't believe I wanna see the morning
Going down the stoney end
I never wanted to go down the stoney end
Mama, let me start all over
Cradle me, mama, cradle me again

I was raised on charm
And I was schooled on the golden rules
Till the love of a winsome Johnny
Taught me love was made for fools

REPEAT CHORUS

I can still remember him with love light in his eyes
But the light flickered out and parted
As the sun began to rise
Now I don't believe I wanna see the morning

REPEAT CHORUS

Never mind the forecast
'Cause the sky has lost control
'Cause the fury and broken thunder's
Come to match my raging soul

REPEAT CHORUS

Now I'm gone above
Or below I'll never know
the choir of the angels singin'
or the fire from the Devil blow

REPEAT CHORUS AND FADE
Wonder why she left off the last verse or changed the single version's first line?

Anyway this girl is totally American Idol material if they would ever let her try it out. Otherwise she can supposedly be seen occasionally in itty bitty clubs on off-nights around the Haight, Cole Valley and the Inner Sunset.

LOL you lost me at American Idol.

Nice to hear that there are young singers out there borrowing from the greats still.

Wow, I've heard Laura sing her original recording, then covered by Linda Ronstadt and the Stone Poneys and then Barbra Streisand. I never knew there were additional verses. This adds some insight to what she was writing about. Laura Nyro was definitely more insightful than the stock songwriters of the era, definitely eclectic and mysterious, without aspiring to be.

If she comes close to touching Janis, she's OK in my book. Nobody today knows who she even is. What a shame. So what's everybody's favorite Janis song?

P!NK does a mean Janis especially live.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wwmUMvhy-lY Only other white girl ever made me cry along w the blues. She was even supposed to star in an upcoming Janis bio (ten years ago) but it never got made - then it got picked up again and (being too old for the part herself) they were gonna let her record the vocals for whoever was gonna play the part to lip sync - but that never got made either.

Medley: Piece of My Heart/Cry Baby (not too hard being they're both by the same composer in a similar vein and written at the same time). To me it feels like a Part 1 and a Part 2 to the same story. Pink does so much better on these two than even Bobby McGee - and that's amazing all by itself. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3EKOn0MX8Cg

One more that she was slated to cover in 1971 had she lived. Esther Phillips picked it up six years later https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HHjBO_VwFxA considerably updating the 1957 original torch-song arrangement https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iOd6CPQeW24 that could have just as easily been covered by Patti Page or Kay Starr or anybody else known for torch songs.

After getting away with I'm A Fool to Want You in 1951 even Sinatra could have gotten away with it like Bessie Smith, Shirley Bassey Tony Bennett, Sarah and Billy, and all kinds of other people.

I think the thread is getting stolen here! But I go for Turtle Blues and just about everything on "Cheap Thrills." Later, more mainstream Janis was something less. I heard an acoustic version of "Turtle Blues" that I liked a lot, but I don't know what era it was from. Maybe very early.
