I was asked to bring in my portable phonograph for office Halloween activities on Friday, and that got me thinking: while I have plenty of dark/creepy classical music that will provide a serviceable atmosphere this time around, I don't have much in terms of the sort of thematically appropriate pop songs people might expect for a party.

I've got plenty of Christmas music and plenty of all-purpose fun music that's good for parties and dancing, but not much Halloween-y. It's a bit late to go hunting for new records in time for this year, but I'd love to put together a more diverse selection for next year.

So: what's your favorite Halloween music on 78?

I don't know if it was ever on a 78, but Screemin' Jay Hawkins - I put a spell on you.

There's always the "Toccata and Fugue in D Minor" by Bach.

It did get a release on 78, but it's absurdly expensive.

As I mentioned, I've got some orchestral music I'm planning to use: the Victor Red Seal Stokowsky recordings of Bach's Tocatta and Fugue and The Sorcerer's Apprentice, and a Columbia recording (don't remember the conductor offhand) of A Night on Bald Mountain, but I only have three Halloween-ish pop songs on 78:
- Watch Out for the Ghost, Red
- Purple People Eater
- (Ghost) Riders in the Sky

...well, technically, I have four, since I have both the Burl Ives and the Vaughn Monroe recordings of that last one. But two versions of the same song doesn't do me much good for a situation like this :P

There was a Guy Lombardo record actually titled, "Halloween", about, what else...Halloween. It was probably a Decca record from the '40's, or early '50's.

Interesting... The Groovie Ghoulies (a horror-themed rock band from Sacramento in the 90s) did a cover of that song:

In fact, that album was just re-issued in the last year or so.

They also covered this Chuck Berry number:

Thanks for all of your kind sharing. But sometimes, you know, the audio quality is not so good that we cannot enjoy them perfectly, especially on the portable devices, like Apple products. My friend advised me to improve the audio quality for my iPhone 6, by transferring the audio formats, such as avi to mov. And, it works very well. :D

I know that it's well past Halloween, but here's another entry.

Dinner With Drac, Parts 1 and 2. I had no idea it was issued on a 78, but here it is.....
