I have what I thought was an Emerson 571. Although the stickers and tags which should give a clue as to the model or chassis are missing, it's identical to the photos I have of a 571. I even went as far as to purchase a Sams for a 571. But alas, it apparently isn't. Instead of a group of 25L6's (I think - I don't have the schematic in front of me) at the rear of the chassis, this one has a single ballast resistor "tube". In addition, a couple 12AU7's exist where 6SN7's are shown in the schematic. Even more interesting, the sticker in the case which shows the tube layout does not reflect these differences. I see no signs that anything has been "butchered" in a past life...everything looks original and untouched. Even the ballast resistor says "Emerson part #---" on it. Any ideas? I do have the serial number, which is more than likely of no use.
------------------
You needn't be too befuddled about the set. There were many instances where equivalent tubes were substituted in a production run, either for unavailability of the original types, or possibly an improvement in the set's design. This one sounds like the supplier ran short of one tube, and Emerson had to quick change to 12AU7 in place of 6SN7. They just never had new stickers made for the tube locations.
------------------
Sams has 2 listings for Emerson 571.
Set No. 76 Folder No. 11 shows a power supply with 4 Selenium rectifiers, instead of 5 X 25Z6 that is shown as an alternate power supply circuit. There are also several 12AU7s.

------------------
Brian McAllister
Durham NC
http://oldtech.net
brian@oldtech.net

Thanks Doug & Brian. It looks like we've solved the mystery. Only one came up (the 25Z6) version when I looked it up on Sam's online index. Too bad that's the one I ordered from Tannenbaum!! I'll have to seek out the 76-11 folder now. Thanks again!!
------------------
Scooter:
If you send me your snail mail address, I can probably send you a copy of the 76-11 folder next week. I am on a business trip this week but I am 99.99% sure I have it at home.
------------------
Tim
