I found this 32" Sony in a trash pile in front of a house. I went through it and found the Horz. Output transistor shorted, and 2 transistors in the switching power supply also shorted, this took with it a fusable 0.1 ohm power resistor.
I thought the flyback might be bad, but I subbed in parts from the junk pile that were close and I got it to work! I didnt run it long this way, just wanted to see if it still had life.
This pic shows the first test run with the correct components in place. So far So good.
The tv picture is more clear than it appears online.
This kinda thing has happened to me before, and I always think of it as a Blessing, the way it all comes together!
Sorry its off topic, Im just excited about it all.
Alan
------------------
Nice one! I think you just got yourself a $400 TV for almost nothing. You got a bit lucky, since these modern TVs are seldom fixable.
Tom
------------------
i have worked on many of these sony tvs. most of the time the output shorts because of bad connections on the driver transformer and output base connections--go overALL of the connections to the horiz output transistor and driver transformer--otherwise the output WILL short again and TAKE THE SWITCHING TRANSISTORS WITH IT. BY THE WAY DO NOT USE SUBSTITUTES FOR THE SWITCHING TRANSISTORS. USE THE C 4834 OR WHATEVER WAS THERE ,AND USE THE SONY VERSION--THESE WILL HAVE THE THICK STURDY PINS, AND ARE LARGER THAN THE SUBS FROM ECG,ETC
GOOD LUCK
------------------
jack south

Thanks Tom and Jack,
Second day, still running ok. I did order the original transistors, two 2SC4834 and one 2SC5148, not the ECGs.
I will go over the connections as you suggested.
Thanks alot!
Alan
------------------
Boy ctc, wish I had read that years ago...I had one of the first Sony color sets( 19"tabletop, wooden cabinet!!)that popped the HO,and took with it a bunch of power supply stuff, and damper diode. It had a crazy bootstrap start up circuit that depended on volts from the HO trans to stay on. I fixed the damn thing 4 times, always the same stuff, but used ECG replacements, and the last time the heaviest highest voltage motorola power transistor made...and it blew again. At the time,I debated getting rid of that start up circuit..I thought that was the problem,as stuff happened so fast you could not move your meter to troubleshoot any thing. I remember last time(for the first time ) the horiz driver transistor was also popped..so fits with what you say. I'll take tube sets any day over that pig.The image of it waiting for the trash man is still in my mind.(to hell with you!!) I kept fixing it because it was my dad's for 15 + years, abd the picture was pretty good. Not a TV repair guy(engineer) ,but probably should have talked to one re: why?? John
------------------
Those early Sony's that used an SCR for HO were some of the meanest sets to repair, I believe now a lot of them could have been fixed using an ESR meter to check the low voltage electrolytics around the horizontal and power supply. My 52" RCA/Hitachi went dead and the ESR meter found several bad electrolytics in the switch mode supply which fixed it, just recently the vertical linearity got all stretched out at the top, ESR found a 3.3 mf at 50 V in the vertical output section that checked open. After I pulled it out I checked it with an Ohm meter and it still gave a good kick....RB
------------------
KA0SCR

What really made those old sony sets with the g.c.s.(sonys term for s.c.r)so hard to fix is that their scr was a gate-turn-off device-meaning that the gate pulse (horiz.drive)was used to turn them on,as well as off.BUT IF YOU LOST HORIZONTAL DRIVE, EVEN FOR JUST A SPLIT SECOND, IT WOULD SHORT THE G.C.S!!(I KNOW,I HAD IT HAPPEN TO ME OFTEN ENOUGH. you had to be SURE that the drive, and start -up ckts. were PERFECT.OTHERWISE,BYE-BYE SG-613 G.C.S(AT ABOUT $20 A POP, IF I RECALL, IN THE LATE 80'S.
------------------
jack south
