Just in case those who don't frequent VK hadn't seen it yet. I picked this set up from the original owner's house recently in Skokie, IL. 21AXP22 is good, chassis is being cleaned and recapped. Only thing it was missing was a tweeter, which is being graciously provided by another VK member. Door pulls aren't shown, I removed them for transit.

I really hope I can score an early color set someday. And then, when I find it, that my wife is feeling generous about bringing something big into the house...again.

That is a beauty. Nice find!

It is easier to ask for forgiveness that it is to ask for permission.

That's usually my mode of operation...I might get an eye roll or have to trade something out of rotation for a while...but she does show more resistance to a tv set than a much smaller radio...I can only imagine that the color sets are pretty big.

But, when the time is right and I find one...I'll figure it out! :D

If you try hard enough and rearrange enough of your collection and furniture, you can always find room for just one more set.....

If you rearrange it well enough, your wife might not even notice the new addition to the collection.

If your not fussy about the make and model you should be able to find a roundy color set by haunting the regional Craigslist pages. Going to the annual spring ETF swapmeet and auction in Hilliard Ohio virtually guarenties that you will find one for sale.

They are as deep or slightly deeper than the early 50's narrow deflection angle 20" monochrome sets, and about 2/3 wider depending on cabinet style. Some of the later metal cabinet roundys are really pretty small compared to most of the consoles.

Nice score, Nick!

I thought I came very close to possibly finding one about a week ago...got a call from a fellow whose dad was an early Westinghouse employee...while we were talking, he mentioned that they had one of the first color TV sets...and I thought his dad had kept it...turned out he kept lots of other stuff, but not that.

I don't think he was interested in selling anything, though. We were just talking about radios in general and it came up. But, one never knows.

Ouch! If you got the one of first of something and if it lasts long enough to get old then it should always be kept until it becomes collectible.

If you ever decide that you don't want it anymore, your Wingate would sure look slick displayed next to my Chandler.

Lots of things had to be done to this set to make it work:

tuner/IF/chroma sweep alignment
full recap, including the cans- no under chassis cobbling on this one!
a whole lot of cleaning: I think it was a smokers set, but not as bad as many I've seen

The Wingate is now displaying a nice color picture, but some things remain:

degauss CRT
convergence
chroma still needs a tweak to get correct color bars: this would be the CW driver transformer, not an alignment issue
clean what's left of the dirty controls, so they aren't scratchy anymore

Enjoy!
