I'm swapping tubes in my VT-71. The cr has some kind of friction tape wrapped aroung the neck, then a card board sleeve, the metal cone, then thin aluminum wrapped wrapped around the next. What would be a good substiute to replace this so i can mount the tube back in the cabinet. I thought aboutwrapping a couple turns of duct tape around the neck, makeing a new sleeve out of a TP core, then reuse the rest. Any other suggestions. I guess I shouldn't be leery of the duct tape sticking, since there was some kind of tape wrapped around the neck before.

I don't see the need for the tape. Wrap the cardboard, tape it tight, and add the aluminium shields. Don't forget the ground lead from the gun shield to the speaker.

Is Friction Tape obsolete?
Duct Tape would probably melt and smell bad when it got hot.

I don't think it's really needed either, it probably helped keep the CRT in place while the set was in transit but shouldn't matter now.

Well,I went with the duct tape.It was on hand. If it proves to not work, then I'll remove it. Another tube had some thick foam rubber that was adhesive wrapped around the neck. The tube with the friction tape was original. The one with the rubber may not have been.

It probably won't get that hot that far down the neck so Duct Tape may be fine.

I would avoid duct tape, friction tape, masking tape or any kind of tape for that matter.

Duct tape will dry out and get rock hard and if it is in contact with the glass of the tube you will never get it off.

If you need to use tape make sure it is away from the tube.

The other thing I avoid is WD-40 for lube. Makes a good finish for metal cabinets like a Tektronix scope however.
